A bolt came off my bike today ....so I'm wondering was do the STW use for thread locking ?

Make sure it's blue, not red, that's the main thing. There are different varieties of brands like Loctite, with different specs on torque break required and how long they take to set.

Also, if bolts are coming undone, might be worth investing in a good torque wrench and do bolts up to spec. I find a lot of bolts don't really need thread lock or much of it. They just need tightening properly. Another thing is some bolts shouldn't have the stuff at all and some should be greased.

Careful though with torque wrenches. Thread lock itself can affect the torque spec. Depends if the manufacturer quoted torque based on thread lock or not. I'm particularly suspect about the stick type like Loctite 248. It's nicer to use in that it's not nasty liquid that eats things and evaporates fast, but it's denser and I wonder about the effect on torque when tightening. I snapped a bolt doing up to torque when using this stuff.

There are different grades so depends on application - for most bike use a low/medium grade is enough. Loctite 248 is a medium grade stick ideal for bikes. It is particularly helpful where there is no mechanical means of locking a thread i.e. nut or lockwasher, so disc brake screws, crank retainers, stem. Also acts as corrosion inhibiter.

222 for me. Breaks easily with hand tools even in small fasteners but never had anything come loose before it was meant to.

THink it's 248 I use, the pritt stick - far more convenient than a tube and it lasts so long that the price difference is basically irrelevant.

But tbh I barely use it on the bike, nor the torque wrench.

Note that 248 takes 24 hours to set, whereas the liquid stuff is much quicker.
