I'm looking fur light 29er wheels, preferably less than 1600 grammes.B ut around 23mm minimum width, wider is better. So far the hunt wheels are winning...
Hi buddy been looking in to mid weight 29 Er wheels to and everything I’ve come across points to hunt wheels they come in below your 1600gram weight and with good pricing to and great reviews.

Stans crest hope pro4 hubs?
Nothing against Hunt, but you could save some £££ and get novatec hubs and kinlin rims yourself, but then again Hope Vs Hunt/Novatec is just brand snobbery too, both are perfectly good hubs (unless you want anodised bling and made in the UK).
Worth noting too that novatec hubs are generally quite lightweight, which means wheelsets built with them tend to have good headline weights (e.g <1600g XC wheelsets) despite heavier rims. I'v got some crests on novatec hubs for my CX bikes and they weight a fraction of sodd all in <£250 MTB wheelset terms!
Just to add that Hunt often change the spec of the Novatech hubs I believe - more seals and better bearings. So going down the buy your own novatec hubs and kinlin rims is unlikely to be a genuine like for like option. Plus presumably Hunt will continue to support their own product whereas aftermarket it can sometimes be difficult to get spares for novatec stuff.
Thanks, k think I'll just go for the hunts. They seem ljke a good bet.
Fulcrum red passion from chainreaction seem a steal.
just brand snobbery too
Depends who is building. I’ve found Hunt wheels to be very well built and stay true and tight no matter what. I’ve not bought Hope Hoops, but I suspect they are just as good. If you go and find your cheaper hubs and rims and get someone else to build them… then, well, maybe they’ll be just as good. Both Hope & Hunt have brilliant after sales service, should you need it, as well. Worth paying for.
Wheel building isn't some black art that requires a Magi on the payroll. It's something you can teach yourself in a couple of hours.
The hunts look like good value if you compare them to hope/Stans custom builts or other factory wheels. But compared to similarly spec's custom wheels for ~£300 or light bicycle carbon wheels for £500?
i bought the 29 gravel wheels from Hunt for my wife. lovely wheels, feel light, spin really well, and come with a nice touch in extras - included the disc rotor 6 bolt adapter and external lockring for bolt throughs.
very well presented. i would definitely buy again. i also built a set of hope hubs on dtswiss rims. really nice too, a wee bit heavier and maybe stronger ? time will tell
if you're after boost...
Or try their wheel-build facility and see what you can get at that weight and price point.
It’s something you can teach yourself in a couple of hours.
I can build wheels, thanks, and I wasn’t self taught. As well as using wheels I’be built myself, I’ve also ridden wheels built by companies specialising in custom wheels, LBS mechanics (several) and factory wheelsets. The Hunts have been as good as any I’ve ridden, in terms of staying true and not requiring retightening.
Can I suggest that a lightweight 29er wheelset shouldn’t be the first wheels you build if you do decide to teach yourself… there’s little less forgiving as regards mistakes born from inexperience than a low spoke count 29er built with something like a Crest. You need to know what you’re doing.
