Going to have a go at building my first wheel this weekend but undecided on what spokes to use. Rims are nextie carbons.

Im 11.5st kitted out and want the wheels reliable and take some abuse but not overbuilt.

Are super comps ok or am i best to stick with comps?

Thanks

Sapim Dlights, 1.65 middle section resists winding/twisting during build process and just over 300gram a set, they work out at around 80p a spoke.

Supercomps would be fine as would revolutions.

I'd recommend sticking with Comps (or Sapim Race which are much the same). Dlights, Supercomps and Revs will wind up significantly more than those, making for more tricky building - a lot of the problems novice builders have are due to getting wind up in the spokes. The difference in weight is negligible and the Comps are significantly cheaper.

I'm going to build them but get my LBS to finish them off.

Being a carbon rim does it matter as to what spoke i choose ? would you guys say Dlights are better for a carbon rim?

Is 14mm the standard nipple size that come with sapim spokes and 12mm DT?

Thanks

Carbon rims are significantly stiffer than alu rims, so anything you fancy will be fine, as above

When you've laced the wheel, stick some bits of masking tape on the spokes before you start bringing up to tension. That allows you to see if the spokes are winding. That, and lubing the treads and spoke holes before you build should give you a fighting chance of avoiding the main pitfalls of building with thin spokes.

I also have some pliers that I've filed down and glued some rubber to the jaws. I use them to grasp the spokes if they're stubborn - something akin to an aero spoke holder.

Ive decided to go with comps. Ive been reading the wheelpro build book by Roger Musson.

Ive got my rims ERD and calculated my spoke length using his tools and spoke calculator.

Rims have a ERD of 590 and with my hub specs i get:

LEFT 3X 284.7
RIGHT 3X 286.2

Only problem i have is with the spokes coming in 2mm increments, rounding the lengths i need 285 left and 286 right.

Should i go 284 left or 286?

Thanks

1. Double check your ERD measurement.

2. 284
