Like the look of the Chisel.  185cm tall  More leg than torso.  Curretly come up right between L and XL.

Comes back to the age-old question of size up or size down.  Any similar built riders out there with some advice?

Ha, I'm looking at one of those too! So tempted. For me it'd be a way back into XC(ish) MTBing after years of being mostly a road/gravel rider.

I'm about the same height and have ridden older Specialized XC models and have always gone for the XL. However I've got limited experience riding 29er / modern geometry MTBs...

i'm 175cm and on a medium.... which is no help to you! But ultimately, it feels right. Seated and standing.

Its a ruddy great bike, i have the more expensive model.. the comp is it? which spec wise i would be a bit disappointed if i paid full RRP, but for the £700 saving i got its a bargain.

Added a dropper to it and really enjoying XC blasts. Its so quick on the flat stuff compared to my enduro bike (obvs!)

Given that tredz currently have the higher spec comp at very nearly half price, but only in XL, I think you’ll be fine on an XL 🙂

They do have a long top tube. I'm 168cm and on a small. Any taller and I would have had to have a medium.

Well, not 100% relevant but not miles away - spesh epic EVO. I’m right on the borderline between M/L. I went with medium and I’m very happy. Did have to slide the saddle back on its rails to feel stretched out enough. I note that dr P is the same height and went with a large epic evo, he seems v happy also.

So maybe there’s not a lot in it, but looking at the geo chart, and given your description “more leg than top” I’d be thinking leaning toward L rather than an XL. It’s just that tredz deal is mighty tempting. Unfortunately there’s not much reach to be lost in the stem, just the saddle rails to play with.

Looking at my epic eco geometry chart versus a chisel, the epic EVO is actually longer in reach (5mm in it on an XL)

Dunno, not helping much am I? But I’m off sick from work with nothing better to do than think about bikes rather than ride them 🤷‍♂️

Oh, btw, in case it opens up options -

Given you’re looking at tredz I assume you have a Halfords c2w voucher? Note this can also be transferred to other physical bike shops, like my local spesh dealer South Downs bikes. That might allow you to actually sit on a bike. Just don’t expect to keep any advertised discount in full, the LBS might ask for you to help cover the hefty commission Halfords would take of it’s a discounted bike.

Im on a large epic, which is basically a carbon chisel. 187cm tall. I put a 90mm stem on ( from 80mm) and a 10mm layback post and its perfect - not too stretched out as i like it to be playful ride on my twisty xc woodland trails.

Compared to my xl v1 hightower the distance seatpost to bars is exactly the same and is exactly what i was looking for

yeah Halfords C2W unfortunately.  Not too many Spesh shops around here which is a bit limiting

Ordered an XL Chisel in the end.  Took it for a quick ride last night and it felt pretty damn good.  Happy with the size I chose.

On trails that felt a bit dull on a trail bike feel much more engaging on an XC hardtail.
