Hi all

Is there a consensus as to what size reach bike you should have for a given height? I'm 6 foot 2 and have a large 2015 Tues, which has a reach of 450mm. Although it feels fine (I don't bang my knees on the bars) a few people have said I look a bit hunched over when riding it. For my height would I benefit from upsizing to the XL with 470mm reach?

A few mates  have said you don't want a dh bike too long so you can get your weight right over the back, but I can't help notice that some of the pros for example of similar height (e.g Minaar) ride bikes with longer reach. Then again he has a metric ton more skill than me 🙂

Just hop on some other bikes if you can, height is one thing but where your proportions are will make a bigger difference

I'm only an inch taller than you and ride an XL bike with 495mm reach, something even longer (510-530mm) reach would still be OK I think, and I've ridden a size L bike with 458mm reach, that's about the shortest I'd want to go though.

495mm feels a bit long sometimes, if I was buying again I'd probably go for the L size which is 470mm reach.

So yeah, 470-480 reach is perfect for me, but that's for general trail riding, for a downhill bike I'd think you'd want something fairly long to give stability at the mental speeds these things are capable of, but a lot of that will come from the head angle giving a huge wheelbase.

Thank you both.

You're right you would need a long wheelbase for stability. Is there any truth in a dh bike needing to have a slightly shorter reach to get your weight right over the back wheel?
