Thought it would be nice to replace an inner tube for a woman in the forest yesterday, in the end she was happy to wait for her husband to get back from the hire place with one.

Between 11 of us we didn't have the right size one anyway. Plenty of 26, (it ain't dead) or 29 though.

In an actual emergency, which one would you use? Stuff a bigger one in or stretch the small size?

Smaller every time. 26 would have worked a treat

What we call 27.5" is actually a lot closer to 26" than 29"

Both can be made to fit.

But 26 tube in a 650 is very easy to do. Assuming it’s not a plus size tyre etc etc

Lots of pro xc racers carry a 27.5 tube for their 29ers.

I only moved into the world of 27.5 last Feb, and was immediately tubless. I'm still using my old stock of 26' inner tubes as my emergency back up. I've only had to use one once since, and it worked fine. At this rate I'll be keeping 26' inner tubes in my backpack till 2038!!😊

Didn't try anything in the end, she was was fairly insistent she'd wait for her husband, (probably only a mile to the shop) and obviously we weren't going to force her to have her bike mended!

I'd have probably gone for 26, just wondered if there was a consensus, (which amazingly for here it appears there may be!) or a genuine reason for plumping for one or the other.

If it was a genuine emergency, and all I has was a Brompton spare, I'd at least be giving that a go!

26 I'd guess as they get a lot bigger than the tyre if you inflate them outside a tyre so there's plenty of stretch.

A 29er being a longer tube would risk getting bunched up or snagged inside a smaller tyre carcass..

That would be my man logic reasoning anyway..

I carry a spare 26" tube for our family's mix of 26" and 27.5" wheels, works a treat in either. I bet most combos would work in an emergency, better tham walking!

This.

I have 27.5, B+ and 29ers.

I have 26 and 29 spare tubes.

They all work enough to finish a ride without problems.

Is that right? I do remember when it first arrived (and was called 650b) that 27.5” isn’t the same measurement we use for 26 or 29 wheels.

Does that perhaps explain why quite often industry types talk about “26, 27 and 29”?

Currently running a 26" in my 27.5 as I can't get the £$%^ to seat tubeless - no problems so far

The BSD (bead seat diameter) of a 26" tyre is 559mm, a 27.5" tyre is 584mm and a 29" tyre is 622mm.if 27.5" really was half way between the two sizes it would be 590.5mm.

Would a 26 tube do a 29er in a pinch?

There was a neat little trick on Pinkbike (I think) with some pro rider showing how to push a little of a 29er tube into itself to allow it to be used on 27/5 or 26 wheels. was quite clever.

Basically anything will do in a pinch (pun intended)

Edit - found it, was NSMB.com rather than Pinkbike

Yep. Have done it myself a few times to get home.
