I could do with some DH shorts as my current normal shorts are a bit not too baggy baggys. The problem is I need zip up pockets so I can carry mu phone and car keys with me. I have no idea where to start the search.
Oh and recommendations for a LS jersey would be nice too. I dont want to look like a factory racer because I'm really not but at the same time some of the normal DH stuff looks a bit garish. I saw the Race Face Indy pants and they look ok but I'm not sure about wearing pants or shorts.
Saggy saddle catching crotch on your shorts is best avoided, apart from that there is little in it.
Some shorts have armour built in.
Trousers are very warm.
Get a cheap jersey, you will shred it.
Troy Lee and Royal are both good, tough as old boots and available in full-on race pyjama stylings or slightly more understated. Sombrio stuff can be gopping but is pretty well designed and the stuff I've seen is well supplied with pockets. MX-style pants are good in properly vile weather but I wouldn;t want to wear them for any riding that involved too much pushing or pedalling.
I've got a Mace LS jersey that I really like. And my Endura Zymes arrived today in the post from CRC and look excellent value and 25 quid (you'll need a liner).
The Mace and Endura stuff is all understated and like you I don't like the power ranger style.
Speedos of course?

I have the haymaker short in black/fluoro and it's brilliant. Very secure closure, zip pocket on the leg and the arse. Very good quality tough material, and thigh vents which keep you cool so you can wear them trail riding. Lacks the annoying bulky rubber patches of a lot of DH shorts.
I've also got the Ransom jersey which is OK but if you want toned down but this is a bargain-

my camo endura zymes are pretty good pockets tough and cheap on crc!
@rolf I take it those shorts are loose enough for armour?
As for TLD stuff that has been suggested I have a c10 year old TLD jersey that is looking a bit tired but it has lasted well.
Race face DH shorts/three quarters are very good, if a bit pricey.
Troy lee shorts are good but the fit is very tight on the ones I've tried. The royal shorts I tried (XL) I couldn't get past my knees.
Andy dont mean to be impolite but what waist are you?
alright andy its me john i got a pair of 09 fox sargeants in moss green there immaculate worn once but too big for me they reatail at £60 £35 to you if you like oh there 34 waist but they feel a little bigger to me
A little on the large side ;-). I take 36" jeans with a little bit of belt needed. The top of my thighs is about 25" around, and stuff like suit trousers usually required a 2" too large waist band plus belt to get a good leg fit (skin tight suit trousers is not a good look).
I bought the Race face DH 3/4s in 36" and they are ever so slightly too large on the waist (plenty of room in the legs). The cinch buckle needs about another three clicks o hold em up. At the bottom of a DH section I look a bit emo 🙁 (arse on show) as there are no belt loops.
Got some troy lee race pants in large and cut 'em off at the knees, good fit on the legs but waist is touch and go at times. No pockets either so not much use to you, although you could always get a bum bag 😉
can bring them up with me to the chase too show ya if you like
the shorts realman was showing you are the sergeants that i have they have 2 zippered pockets plus a lense wipe concealed in one and a specific compartment for your phone there real nice
John new user name hey? I usually take a 34-36 but they are definitely worth a look. I had a good one yesterday but some strange scouser turned up on an Iron Horse with Boxxers no helmet and full adidas gear and started asking loads of questions about my bike like is it carbon. Its a £1k pitch its not bloody carbon, prat!
Are you up for it in 2 weeks I cant wait to get back up there Im really enjoying my DH at the moment.
I have the same problem as AndyPaice I seem to need a size up from my waist measurement due to not just my manly thighs but I also seem to have a big arse so shorts tend to be very tight there but hang down at the back. I might have to start using belts on my bike shorts.
I've fit Race Face big pads and 661 Kyle straits over the Sombrios no bother. There's a good bit of overlap too to stop your thighs getting exposed.
yeah new name again 🙂 i will try and get up should be able too, these shorts are baggy too baggy for me, ill bring them with me you can try em on they are like new as i have only worn them round the house. I might be more likely to have a go at some downhill if i got somebody else with me so ill definitely try to get up there.
You should I've come on loads just in the past two weeks. Give it a try and if you like it get a full face and it will give you more confidence.
I always find that after doing a DH session I find myself looking at different lines down familiar trails because I have more belief in myself. Sounds like a load of bull but I'm sure people on here would agree with me.
I got some UFO shorts from MDracing products recently. I think they were only £35 and they are good quality.
under even.
