A few years back I remember building some out of MR Ride hubs, Halo Aerorage rims (24h/32h) and ACI double butted spokes with brass nipples.

They were great, coped fine with commuting, training and racing, weighed 1600g ish and cost around 160 quid.

I'm looking for something similar but the cheap Aerorage rims no longer seem to be made.

Is self building still the best option? Anyone built anything recently?

I'm not going super-expensive. If i start having a crack at racing, it'd be 4th cat and i'd like to be able to replace the rims if possible (I use one road bike for everything due to lack of space)

Whatever the cheap shimano ones are these days. Can be had for less than £200 (I think) and are excellent for the money.

Kinlin XR21T rims from The Cycle Clinic? Wide and asymmetric option on the rear.

OR you could buy my 1500g Velocity A23/Novatec/Sapim wheels I have half-heartedly tried to flog on here 😉

Seriously though, think you'd be going some to build a decent wheelset for much less than £200 now. The wheels above cost £220 for the parts IIRC.

For DIY build, Kinlin rims, Novatec hubs and ACI spokes - Halo Aerorage is a Kinlin XR300 rim - Priced the whole lot a sdeals.com for £180. Been running some Aerorage rims on a pair of fixed wheels for 5+ years - bombproof.
