Canyon is first choice but OOS
Any other direct sales co's?
I'm keen to see the responses to this - I'm in the market for one around the same sort of money for some training and to complete a Edinburgh to London charity ride next year 🙂
Just bought one of these in the last two weeks as my first road bike.

Great spec for the money and the frame is the same as the Sensa Romagna which scored 4.5/5 in this months cycling plus. Lovely bike and good service from Merlin.
Caad8 Sora?

superb frameset and good spec for the money - the 105 version won the CyclingPlus 1K bike of the year 2012
how does that beat this?

rob - I'd go for the Giant - the Defy frameset is reckoned to be one of the best and most comfy, plus you get a carbon fork. Most important thing will be what fits you though.
I may be biased as I have a carbon Defy, but the reviews all reckon that the alloy Defy frame is top of the pile or close
TriUk might be selling off this season's ex-hire bikes very soon if you don't mind a pre used bargain...

not that much cheaper than new and poor components (2300 🙁 )
Get something good second hand.
A bit over budget but I've just bought a Cannondale Caad8 105 for £800.
Current issue of Cycling Plus has a sub £750 road bike test might be worth checking out (I've not read it yet...)
