My Krampus doesn't have any mounts, so I'm wondering if I splash some cash on something else.

Needs to have rear rack minimum, front ones a bonus, not bags. Thinking of bikes like the Trek 1120, Marin Pine Mountain. Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Surly Troll? Or Ogre? Machine gunned with Mounts.

Not really an MTB but they are just so versatile and cheap. Go tubeless as well and you have a brilliant, bomb proof tourer.

Genesis Longitude?

Bombtrack Beyond+ ADV or Beyond +2?

Oh yeah, if don't mind alloy there's the Sonder Frontier?

Wishes hadn't seen the 2018 Bombtrack+ range now. Ah well, costs 2.5k and weighs the same as my Vagabond. " Mutter, mutter. Geometry schmeometry, Alan Partridge special plate cartridge, grumble, stupid RATM-named nonsense, hrumph, 29+ tyres cost what now? Grumble.."

+1 for Genesis Longitude. I normally used bikepacking bags on mine, but have used panniers a few times on easier terrain. I'd say it's better with a front load than a rear one, Specialized pizza rack fits ok and keeps the weight higher up for any off road stuff.

A cheaper option would be to just get a new fork for the Krampus?

or use racks that don't require specific mounts on your existing bike? You get seat clamps with mounting points and axle mount racks as well as several types that use various clever tricks to be mounted on any bike - look at tubus and old man mountain stuff

A Singular Swift would probably fit the bill; it has rack mounts and the option to buy a touring fork. It's a straight steerer though so limiting if you wanted to use a sus. fork.

Surly Ogre was the same frame as the Surly Karate Monkey which was one of the the first 29" MTB's. SO quite how the Surly Ogre is not a MTB is a bit beyond me.. Yes it's not a harcore hardtail but still!

I'm building up an inbred 29er with orge forks for This purpose. Suppose most mtb frames with rack mounts would work though.

First off, what *exactly* do you want it for? Are you wanting an MTB style frame because you prefer the riding position or are you wanting something that will deal with fire road type terrain or are you wanting to go on trails? Otherwise it's like asking about a car and being recommended a Mondeo when you were actually looking at doing the Paris-Dakar rally!

How long an "adventure"? How long between restocking points? Why panniers and not soft luggage? Is it because you already have them?

Rack mounting points were never exactly common on MTB frames and since soft luggage became popular there's even less reason to add that cost to production.

Looking at Surly's offerings the Troll is probably your best bet - if you can't get something to fit to that frame then it's unlikely to fit anything.

I used the Marin Pine Mountain for my bikepacking trips, with soft luggage. Worked well, the plus tyres help the lack of suspension. I did natural trails, South Downs Way, Trans Cambrian and the Quantocks.

For the price it was a really good bike, Marin does have a strange axle standard for the Pine Mountain though, so limits future upgrades.

I know the majority of people are fine with rigid bikes for bikepacking, but for me I now prefer to use a hardtail with plus wheels. I personally found I prefer the comfort of the front suspension, especially when doing 12 to 14 hours in the saddle.

Thanks.

It's to do a variety of riding and have soft bags but need some panniers for certain things/jobs so will look at Tubas (which I hadn't heard of). The Surly (Troll) does look pretty ideal too so could be the option if I need to change the bike. . I have a Singular Swift too, but no mounts on that either. Cheers all, some good food for thought (and investigation) there.

On the strength of my Genesis Tarn, I would go with a Longitude in a heartbeat. I was tempted by one in the first place, but ultimately had to acknowledge that I would have little use for the adventuring-oriented features.

Get a Longitude.

I was going to suggest a Krampus. They look like great bikes. The new ones have a full compliment of mounts.

Rear racks are available that don't require pre-drilled frame mounts, e.g. axle mounted racks which could open up your choice to oooh, lots and lots of options...!

I wouldn't get too hung up on rack mounts. I did many, many miles on Old Man Mountain racks which don't need them; I still have a rear OMM rack that I could fix to my current bike in the (possibly unlikely) event of wanting to use panniers. The bike I'm using now is based around a second hand frame I bought off here for £60 last year, with a set of 2007 Surly forks plugged in the front. Seems to do OK - Monday morning:

Why not an ECR? Basically the same as your Krampus but with all the mounts you can shake a stick at. You'll be able to swap most of the bits from the Krampus straight over too, which should offset how spendy they are.

I'm with others having bought a Longitude. It was the uncool 2016 version with alloy forks but was a lightly used secondhand bargain. Even with my measly levels of stamina I think i could cycle a very long way fully loaded and be very happy (obviously I cant with all my commitments but it is the thought that i can!)

These will fit on your krampus fork, though you may need to shim them with some inner tube to avoid scratches.

then you can fit one of these.

.at the front of this rack there's an m4 sized hole on which you can attach a GoPro mount and fit the light of your choice . Mind the nyloc nut and locking washers..

This is a good size for that from rack, above.

Hopefully, you won't need to ditch the excellent krampus fork.

A second hand Voodoo Wazoo fatbike, I've had a PX pannier rack for months that I've meant to fit, but never got around to... Perhaps because I would be expected to then do a lot more food shopping! 😉

In true STW style, an alternative is to change the fork for one with triple cage mounts
