Local bike shop says August first slot for a service! I need to replace disc brake pads...
Before ordering wrong thing from Chainreaction....any suggestions appreciated? There are lots of options (too many)
Brakes are XT.
Resin or sintered?
Is there any difference fitting them? (In this one I need as fool proof as can be).
I usually go sintered for durability on the every day bike (and better in the wet I think aren't they?). TBH I usually go sintered for durability on all my bikes. Go resin if stopping quickly (or locking the wheel up) is more your thing.
Uberbike race matrix best pads by far and much cheaper
Spot on- thank you
Forgive me, but I get the impression you’ve not done this before. It’s really easy though.
what I do is with the old knackered pads still in place I wedge a screwdriver between them and push the pistons back into the caliper. Then you can put the new pads in
then with the wheel back in pump the lever a few times to set the biting point and (hopefully) away your go!!
edit
i use Uberbike race matrix or sintered.
Ubers ordered.
Martyn advice very welcome - appreciated.
Another vote for Uberbike, either sintered or race matrix. I have the finned ones (I like the look) and like that you can replace the pads but keep the same fins.
☝️good idea re. pushing the pistons while the old pads are still in! I normally do it directly on the pistons with a wooden spoon/spatula thing requisitioned from the kitchen.
+1 for the race matrix, i didnt bother with fins though. If you're pushing the pads/pistons back, open the bleed screw on the lever or there is a risk of popping the diapragm thing in the cylinder end. Don't ask how I know this...................
£9.99 metallic Shimano G04S pads from Decathlon now and again for me.
Yep, I always buy Shimano. Usually sintered.
And don’t push the pads apart with a screwdriver when your new pads are in. Quickk way to ruin pads.
Personally, I always push the pistons back a little when changing pads - otherwise I can’t get the wheel back into place. But honestly, I’ve never opened any bleed screws.
You say you have xt brakes, just Make sure you check the model number. There are old xt and new xt pad shapes.
Uberbike have been brilliant on all my bikes, I usually wait for a 25% off offer on a bank holiday and stock up.
Uber must have changed the recipe on the matrix pads as i thought I was going to die with them as were rubbish.
In these conditions, i am using Shimano resins as sintered damage the discs with heat and friction, even standard winged pads. I use Noah and Theo yellow sintered when the weather is colder/ damp and work fine.
Has anyone else discovered the gorilla brakes ceramic nano tech ones yet, disco brakes are bloody good too.

I had always got away without opening a bleed screw until the time I didn't. I think it depends on how far you have to push the pistons combined with how full the reservoir is. After it happened to me, I googled it and it happens more often than you might think.
