As the title says, m looking for some padded short for long rides, as the various cheapo ones I've been using for years are all pretty worn out/ not cutting it. I'm planning some long rides this summer (hopefully if were allowed), so i need something comfy. They'll be worn under looser fitting shorts. Any recommendations? I'm looking at the Rapha core shorts, Morvelo overland bibs and DHB Aerons at the moment.

Thanks

Can't say I'm blown away by the Rapha Cores, the seam up the middle of the pad can start to make itself apparent after an hour or so on the road bike.

But then I'm also finding my new Enduras a bit uncomfy also, which makes me think that if you've been using the same shorts for years (like I had also) then you might want to give yourself a bit of time to get used to new shorts...

My next pair will be some Castelli Competiziones, I liked the KISS pad in my old Castellis, just a shame they're one size too small!

I picked up some Morvelo bib & brace in their sale that I've worn both as stand alone lycra & under baggies. They're lovely & comfy. I think it's they're standard bib short that usually retailed for around £80.

I actually think the top-end DHB Aerons are as good as anything else out there tbh. If the Morvelo bibs have the same pad as their road ones, then they'll be decent too.

I wear bibs on the road bike, but for mountain bike stuff, worn under baggies, I actually prefer waist shorts and use the top-end DHB Aeron ones. More convenient for calls of nature and less sweaty on your torso.

thanks, some good feedback there, I was wondering whether bibs were a good idea or just to go for standard shorts, especially as i dont want to overheat. I think ill try to lean towards wasit shorts, as BWD suggests

During lockdown I started doing longer mountain bike rides as I was riding to the local spot, I was looking at new padded shorts due to discomfort but after chatting to the shop guy I tried chamosis cream instead, its worked for me and was only a tenner. Maybe worth a go to see if it improves the ones you have which dont cut it?

Rivelo Honister are bloody good for the money, can easily crank out 100 mile in them.

Got an amazingly uncomfortable new saddle on the road bike and that prompted new Lycra shorts. Gone from £30 dhb ones to the £56 dhb Aerons and it’s a bit improvement. I still think the saddle may have to go but I’m going to give it a few more weeks as it cost me £50!

They’ll be worn under looser fitting shorts.

My thoughts on that are "why?", as it will possibly, probably?...be cause for chaffing.

Anwyays, I really like the padding on my Castelli Premio shorts from last year. The names seem to have all changed this year though - they were the next model up from the Endurance.
The chamois on my Assos are okay but the padding just isn't as good as Castelli imo, and I've tried the top end Assos too.

I tried one pair of Morvelo bibs and found the padding to be a bit thin around the gooch area, possibly a case of 'buyer beware'. Never tried DHB bibs, they do seem good value but lycra shorts are one thing I don't skimp on.

Because we are mountain bikers, not roadies on mountain bikes... but seriously, I've never had an issue with chafing from baggies on a mountain bike or the cross bike for that matter on all-day rides and even a 24-hour solo. Personally I think it just comes down to what you're happiest wearing, off road there's no particular comfort issue, though lycra fetishists yearn for there to be one so they can show off their niche roadie branding 😉

Baggies over bibs is quite normal isn't it? No chafing recorded here. I tend to find I need better pads for road rides than MTB (more standing up perhaps?) so whereas my favourite road bibs are Castelli I find I can get away with cheaper Endura or Craft on the mountain bike.
