That's absolutely lovely, and so much more than a bike.
That is lovely Sir. Love the silver and maroon. And the badge is spot on.
Very cool. The badge is perfect.
You were worried going through wester hailes.....
Oh how I would of liked to see a scrote try and take that beauty away from you. Love the bike it's a cracker (as is the map, I might steal that idea)
I have all of Europe at 1: 3 000 000 on another wall and the whole world on a third
That seat tube badge. Oh man.
The forum has never needed a "like" button more.
Today has been the best day I have had for what seems like a long time. You guys added to it. i was actually laughing walking from the train station to Shand reading the comments. I love that the wee badge has gone down so well as well. I really was not sure.
Ta for that.
Lovely bike TJ and the ST badge is a nice touch.
Here's to many happy miles on it.
Badge is perfect + lovely colour
What are the cranks?
middleburn
Lovely colour TJ, now away and put some miles on it.
lovely. i have always had a soft spot for silver wheels and finishing kit. a beautiful memorial. i hope it brings you a lot of joy.
Nice. Enjoy
It is a very lovely bike. I wish you many very happy adventures with it. Have fun 🙂
Lovely bike TJ. That first scratch is going to hurt even more than they normally do. Enjoy your adventures.
thats lovely teej. bikes not too shabby but the badge is the best bit.
thats going to give you many miles and smiles.
That was well worth the wait. The seat tube dedication is *chef's kiss*.
Lovely bike and the badge is a class touch
It's beautiful, and like everyone else I choked up a but when I saw the badge - a lovely touch.
fantastic - here's to you TJ.
Brilliant. Enjoy
Only one complaint about the silver rims and no other criticism? Standards are slipping around here 🙂
valves and logos, how many spacers, when are you going to tidy up that coax cable?
you already pre-defended yourself on the cables, stem, saddle
Nailed it. 👍
Looks great TJ, get out there and enjoy it!
That badge!
What's this running down my cheek?
Great finish on that bike. Hope you have many good times on it. I'm not crying, YOU'RE crying.
That is a very very very nice bike. Everything a custom bike should be and that colour is incredible. Enjoy the ride ...

Picture taken inside not in the garden. Otherwise we would have ripped into patio, grass, weeds and fencing.
The frame badge is a lovely touch. I'm really pleased it's come out the way you wanted TJ, you must be chuffed.
That's a lovely bike TJ. Like everyone else I'm welling up a bit too
Lovely bike TJ and the badge makes it that much more special. You’ve done her proud!
Is now the time to mention the hideous silver rims?
Asking for a friend
😜
No - but having put mudguard on it i want to cry - the mudhugger rear looks hideous 🙁
silver rims are beautiful
When you get a bit of time can you post some photos of the frame and the welds so we can salivate some more?
It's very you!
Have you considered getting it covered with an invisiframe kit to keep it looking lovely for a long time? Especially if you plan to use bikepacking bags? The guys at Pedals do it to an exceptional standard. You'd never know it was there.
I find it hard to believe you rode it from Shand's workshop to yours on the canal and it's still that clean.
I washed it in the bath when I got home before I took pictures
NO bikepacking bags for at least the first year to keep it shiny. My touring will be done with a trailer for this very reason
I was tempted to get the trailer colour matched
For elshalimo
My frame before painting and before any cleaning up of the welds. I don't know how much they clean them up. I'll take some closeups of the frame later ontoday

The frame is not finished at this point
One of the details I really like is all the threaded bosses are actually welded in- not rivnuts
That's lovely, very old school vibe to it, I'd say the forks almost ruin it! (there you go, someone had to be controversial). Not sure what else you could do though other than going full Dangerholm and stripping and polishing them or spending more on a polished Intend Hero. But it's a lovely bike for sure, the seat tube is brillant.
NO bikepacking bags for at least the first year to keep it shiny
Not even a wee Carradice saddle pack? Surely no self respecting gentleman tourer would be without one?
OS 1:250000 they dont do it as a flat or that edition any more
A map maker would do it, we have one local but as mentioned it wouldn't be cheap. Have fancied it myself, good to see how big it would end up.
I tried to fit my little ortleib saddle bag last night - incompatible with the saddle I put on it - bah! But a Carradice longflap camper might look cool 🙂
I agree about the forks - It has actually come with a colour matched rigid fork. I tried to persuade them to colour match the lowers on the sus fork but they wouldn't - too difficult / time consuming / expensive to do and almost impossible to get the right standard of finish apparently
It has actually come with a colour matched rigid fork
the carbon one? They are very nice. You might actually enjoy it for the full old skool vibe
No its a steel surly fork I thin with 9 million attachment points on it. I doubt i will ever use it
sorry elshalimo - my phone appears to be incapable of taking closeups of the welds
No problem
the raw frame one on the previous page you should be able to zoom in if you really need to!
I still cannot get over how deep and lovely the paint is - to the point you can feel it - it doesn't feel like a steel tube. IIRC two undercoats, two top coats, two layers of lacquer rubbed down between each coat and finally its buffed
too difficult / time consuming / expensive to do and almost impossible to get the right standard of finish apparently
I think there are people who do this no?
Shand said that they didn't want to because the time it would need to get to the standard of finish that they would find acceptable makes it cost prohibitive. Sure folks will paint for lowers for you but to show standards? Its hard to describe just how lovely the paintwork is.
I think there are people who do this no?
Not going to be easy to get an exact match at this stage if the batch has already been used.
Paint should be no issue as its a stock colour from a maker of motorcycle paints. However while it would be nice its not worth a minimum of a couple of hundred pounds with a likelihood the finish still will not be up to the standard of the rest of the bike. This is show quality paint
The paint is beautiful!!. Here in all it's glory (I follow Shand on Instagram)
ah, beat me to it. Those photos are much nicer
Just popped up on Shands Facebook feed as well. 👍
Better pics for sure - but its more claret / burgundy in colour than it looks in those - although it changes hugely depending on the light
Now with full mudguards and a comfy saddle, stem flipped and bars and grips sorted. the gear cables are going to be redone with a gadget rohloff makes that turns the cables 90degrees at the shifter end. No traffic cones tho - I just couldn't do it
The paint colour changes hugely in the light - looks almost pinkish in the sunshine but almost purple in dim indirect light
rides so nicely as well and is really comfy *does the happy dance again*

Oh yes. That will do. 👌
the gear cables are going to be redone with a gadget rohloff makes that turns the cables 90degrees at the shifter end
I wouldn't bother with those if it was mine. The noodles used to be supplied with the hubs direct from Rohloff but they stopped after a while. They were super-soft and easily damaged because of where they were located. Actually made things worse most of the time. On a bike with bars like that, you shouldn't have to do anything to get a nice cable run. Looking at those pictures, I'm not sure why the cables were left so long. Shorter cables and the shifter rotated round should sort things out. Bear in mind, shortening the cables on the Rohloff isn't quite as straightforward as it seems. Be patient and set aside some time. Also, make sure you read the manual as the relationship between the length of the outer and the length of the inner is pretty important.
Ta - I have a set of the rohloff noodle things but was just talking to a bike shop owner that used v brake noodles. Certainly rotating the shifter will help as well - and I have cabled rohloffs before

Would a Rollamajig work (the above advice not withstanding)?
I got one for my Pitch from here, been brilliant.
Ah those pics are much better and with the stem flipped it is now looking super.
The last thing my ex gave me was a Race Face headset. She died ten years ago, long after we broke up. I move the top cap from that headset to whichever bike I'm riding the most at the moment so she gets to go out for some good rides. That seat tube badge is beautiful, and it made me blub. Good for you, TJ. That's a smashing bike.
It's very lovely, and interesting too - I saw it on the Shand instagram earlier and shared it around the STW staff! I wonder if you'd like to give it the front page treatment and tell the story behind it and your choices? There's a 'Readers' Rides' form to help capture the key info:
https://form.asana.com/?k=Qz1S6ibQTvMWWrxM4Q4J0A&d=1121725724315322
You and this bike are special though, so you can email me directly as many pics and words as you like (the form deliberately restricts the number of pics so I don't get lots of pics of bikes I'll never feature!) - I recommend WeTransfer for free sending of many files. And if you stand back just far enough to fit the whole bike in while holding the camera about level with the BB, that's usually a good angle for showing a bike off.
The rest of you reading this can also use the form to submit pics of your bikes and I might decide they're interesting enough to feature and ask you for more pics! TJ just gets pre-approved 🙂
My mummy says i am special 🙂
Is it really of that much interest? I have milked it a lot on here 🙂
Can do if you want tho
Is it really of that much interest?
Yes, yes it is.
Pm sent Hannah
Garden bike racks need painting and bins don'ts line up properly. 🙂
Lovely bike. Will look even better with the rigid forks and a nice Brooks saddle. Silver finishing is very classic and it needs to make you smile.
Such a lovely bike, very happy for you tj.
Brooks saddle - my arse!
That's a lovely bike TJ. Colour, spec, and finishing kit is spot on.
B17. Had one on the single speed until it was stolen. Either your arse or the saddle will succumb and then it will then be perfect. Or buy a used one that's had the hard work outsourced. Honey brown and silver, mmmm.
its only retro looking not old fashioned 🙂 brooks saddles are instruments of torture
