You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Yes I know it's still pretty dry but I'm just thinking what if it rains for the week before mayhem. Rode close to the eastnor estate last night and just a handfull of rain storms in the last few days reminded me how floppy the mud is n
So what's good as a mud tyre just in case?
XR4 great all rounder imo
Panaracer trailraker is the best... bit, well a lot sketchy on hardpack! but grips the sludge like nowt else.
Put a Mud X on a spare front wheel?
Sorry should have explained more. I have both dry fast tyres (great at last years dry mayhem) and pana fire xc pro's as my normal all purpose but I'm thinking what if it's a mud fest as in 2007.
I already have one mud tyre a 1.5 conti from 2007 Just wanted current recommendations for something along those lines to cut through the gloop
Ran trailrakers for a few years, then tried Bonty Mud X, which I personally found much better
Mud X. Great in the mud but personally I use one on the front for most of the year. Plus when it's not covered in mud, it's also reasonably light.
Mud X. Light, roll reasonably well, grippy enough in all conditions so can be used all year. But then you put on your summer tyres and remember what fast rolling is.
Mud x here too.
Mud X FTW
Trailrakers are grippy but draggy and no fun on roots and rocks. Mud-X are so good I started really enjoying the winter gloop after years of dreading the wet months. Pound for pound the best tyres I've ever owned, as per above, you could leave them on all year but if they are going to be for muddy days only get slim 1.8".
Another Bonty Mud X here - simply can't fault them (and at £20ea, wortha punt!)
Nobby Nic / Racing Ralf for the dry races though.
Mud X for XC use- light and effective. Not even as draggy as you'd think. They're not too good at wet rock though but that's a smaller tradeoff than the staggering drag of swampies and trailrakers.
in my experience there is no mud quite like the mud you get at a rainy enduro!
A good idea would be to do a search on the old mayhem threads from years gone back and see what everyone did well in/on then (hint, it is nearly always muddy!)
FWIW for enduros I take a pair of 1.3 schwalbe cx pro in the van as 'insurance' against ridiculo-clag, and then do ok in mud x's (1.8 at the back but my frame tyre/mud clearance isn't fab)
Have a look at maxxis medusa's too. Have a few xc racer mates who've used them for very muddy winter series races and liked them.
Nevegals ... eugh!
Mud X is great winter tyre and I find they’re simple & safe.
Trailraker is the best s#itty weather tyre I use, but for 3hr+ rides that include hardpack & tarmac, you start to realise that your getting unusually knackered ... I feel they are really only suited to the bad stuff if you’ve got them on both wheels.
Fire XC Pro are a great all-rounder that I have used at both ends in all seasons.
IMHO: Best combination for a mix of wet trails scattered with muddy areas is Trailraker or MudX up front, with a Fire XC Pro out back.
Cheers
