Hi after one cheap light packing up before going out and another mid ride,
me and the clan are after some decent rear lights mainly off road but also sometimes on road.

Our front ones are awesome but have neglected the rear lol.

What you got and any thoughts greatly received.

Your mates won't want you to get the Moon Nebula, very bright.

Exposure Flare has been good for me - have one on the back for a good portion of the year (twilight rides home in summer etc) super bright and haven't lost it in 5 yrs or so.

One of those Monty linked to. I know them as the xlite 100 but they work well, robust and good for dropper posts with the saddle rail mount.

The only rear lights I've not destroyed commuting in all weather are the cheap twin aaa cateye things. All the other fancy ones I've had have only lasted max one winter.

The topeak red light seem to last a couple of years. Are are the best alternative.

A mudguard would prolong light life. or just get the £10 cateye.

Lezyne zecto rear (what those on ones are a rip off of) had it for nigh on 7 years, got it free with a magazine subscription, still going strong.

The cheap Aldi rechargeable ones - £15 for front and rear.

The rear can go low enough that you don't blind the poor soul behind you, bright enough for the road. No issues with water or mud affecting them, but I do use a mudguard to keep my lights and my backside a bit drier and cleaner.

Almost every rear light I've owned has been destroyed by winter. The best I've had has been a moon something or other which has lasted the last 2, may be 3 years.... BUT it wouldn't charge yesterday, so no riding for me. I usually find the seals are crap and eventually the battery get knackered.

I just bought a Moon Arcturus pro as a replacement, no idea if it's seals as well.

monkeyboyjc +1

I tend to go cheaper on the rear as they just dont last that long. I do have them on a lot more for rides, so perhaps just knackering seals. I also have gone back to AAA or AA batteries as I can replace them...

If you want something to last a lifetime, get a Lupine Rotlicht, build like a tank and the Li-ion battery is replacable for when it eventually starts to lose capacity.

Programmable brightness as well as lots of flash / pulse modes.

Timely thread. My Cue light seems to have died over the summer and it seems they don't make them anymore.

Are the ones with G-sensors any good, or is it a gimmick?

Onzadog I have one of these and it just works well.

It has an auto feature which turns itself off then zero movement is detected and then “wakes up” with any bike movement

The “brake light” feature works very well and is bright

I have an Exposure TraceR that is still going strong after 3 winters. The mount is nice and strong so no worries about it bouncing out during a ride.

I quite like the brake light on the Lupine, although it also goes off every time you ride over a speed bump...

Knog blinder for me, bright and easy to charge as you just push it into any USB socket and it charges itself.
No leads needed.

There's a bundle of 3 of those round lights with the brake function on this site for £38. smart lights

(you have to wizz down to towards the bottom of the page to find them).

This. Mines great, super robust, reliable and seriously bright. Feel safer knowing its there. Easy to reach behind and unclip it from the bracket to turn on without stopping if needed.
