My daughter has a Specialized Tricross that has a square taper sealed BB. It needs replacing. What measurements do i need to ensure i buy the correct replacement?

Thanks

Ian

Width of the bottom bracket shell, (73 or 68mm) and length of the spindle which you'll have to take the cranks off to measure.

I think there's an oddball taper size too, but it's likely that Specialized just use a standard Shimano one.

The length of the axle and the length and threading of the bottom bracket shell.

So typically something like BS 68/118.

British threading, 68 mm shell, 118mm axle.

Some don't use the BS bit (as the length of the shell tells you the threading) 68 and 73 use BS threads, 70mm uses IT.

Tricross is probably a BS 68 Shell. Which is the "standard" for road bikes.

ISO and JIS tapers. Can't remember what shimano use (JIS i think), but you are unlikely to come across anyone who doesn't use that one these days, unless you're into track exotica or old classics.

If you take out the existing BB it might still have the sticker on it telling you what the dimensions are, assuming it's not come off or been rendered unreadable by dirt and water staining. Spa Cycles have a good selection of square taper BBs.
