Today, given the heat I decided to forgo the Camelbak and baggy shorts for my short spin in favour of full on XC racer kit.  I was riding well and feeling pretty good until on the way home two roadies passed me and told me through muffled s****s that I needed new shorts because mine were 'a bit see-through'....

They are Assos shorts from ooh, 2006 ish, so it's understandable.  Question is, if I don't want to spend £100 again (I had more money in those days) what should I go for that's got a similarly dense pad and is well made?  Non-bib preferred.

Decathlon , their (up to 3hr) chamois is my current fave. 700 or 900 can never remember which.

Rapha Cores can be had without Bib straps and there is a 25% off code until tomorrow night iirc. The core has the same pad as the classics.

🤮

£100 for 12 years use seems good value

Yeah could get the Assos again considering how well they’ve lasted!

I bought some Rapha core and they’re nice, can’t vouch for their durability yet though

Second the Rivello option. Also Pearl Izumi. Both reasonably priced nice kit at SP

+3 for Decathlon BTwin.  The XC ones are virtually identical to the road ones but £5 cheaper

I encountered a couple of dudes on roadbikes a few months ago, the one at the back had a pair of utterly See-through white Lycra shorts on.

I Nearly had a stroke, but he was going too fast...

Depends what's in the sakes or on eBay, but Craft and Endure seem pretty good.

I myself am tempted by the Rivelo bibs on Sport Pursuit, but have tended to stick with the better no name stuff on eBay, such as Tenn.

My bib shorts and unlined tights are both by Tenn, and have lasted through three years of pretty constant use.

Best £17.99 I could have spent.

Rapha cores don't last two seasons before going see thru, ime. I have had better mileage out of the top end DHBs, don't know if they come in bibless though.

Is there a brand that is longer in the leg?

My specialised ones are a bit short and make me look like kylie in hot pants.

I have tried 3/4 ones but I find the elastic too tight around the top of my calf muscles and lead to cramp.

Decathlon are good if you like thick pads, go up a few sizes though as the pad seems to want to curl up at the front if its too tight.

My favourite shorts are a set of fakes (replica team kit not castelli/rapha) from China at the moment, £18 for shorts and jersey!

As an aside, I think the Rivelo Honisters are great bibs, but quite a bit warmer than my other ones, I'm certainly not wearing them in current conditions...
