Not sure about Superstar ones tbh and I've been bitten by Mavic spokes before.

Anything that I should consider <£400 secondhand or new?

They have to be lighter than my Giant OEM disc wheels and a wider profile wouldn't go amiss.

They're not superlight, but neither am I, but they were quite a bit less using the garage 'heft' test against the stock ones on my Cannondale.

Kinesis Crosslight 4

I would go with Hunt.
Got a pair of 4 seasons disc,fantastic.
Around 1550 grams.
I believe they do an aero lighter one too.
Both in budget around £400.
Thanks,
Max

Hunt 4-season disc. About 1600g the pair.

I think the ones in the classifieds are actually ONE RIM plus another set of Alex rims mated to Formula hubs.

But go buy the 4-season disc new if you can. Definitely worth it.

I have these: Actionsports (1590g, ZTR Grail on FunWorks hubs)
l.e. But yes, the Hunts look very good as well.

Those are not Hunt 'wheels' in the classfieds, just wheels built on Hunt rims.

Got a pair for MrsB and they are very impressive wheels for the money (light, stiff, come set up for tubeless). I'd buy another pair, no question.

Kinesis Crosslight V3/V4s are good, cheap and light.

I've got Stans Grail's on Superstar Icon Ultra hubs and they're excellent, survived a season of Cross, so they'll put up with peaks based road bimbling.

Have a look at DT Swiss R23.
About 1550g, nice hubs and skewers/thruaxles. Tubeless, bladed spokes.
Fast and strong - ride them both off road and on. Even doing red MTB trails on them and never had issues.

Just Riding Along Jawbone Disc/Disc Lite/Disc Lite SP depending on budget and body weight.

Standard parts - Pacenti SL25 rims, Sapim spokes & nips of various flavours, Bitex hubs which based on the non-disc pair I have seem to work pretty well.

I'll be sticking a pair on my new winter roadie when I get it sorted.

The Kinesis are 1,550 ish and about £240

Mine are doing fine so far and have done 3 peaks, lots of off road riding and lots of on

Edit - downside was that getting some GP4000's on them was near impossible !

How about a pair of Mavic Kysrium all road?

I have a pair that are as new, never ridden. They have been built up onto a bike but that was it. QR front and rear or can be 15QR and 142 x 12. I have the adaptors for both. They cost me £675 but open to a offer if you wish 🙂

http://www.mavic.co.uk/wheels-road-triathlon-ksyrium-pro-disc-allroad for the wheels, also if you want to see them on the bike have a look at the Niner in my history. Thanks

I just built up something similar, Novatec hubs, DT D460 db rims, 28 DT revs, brass nipples. Cost £240ish and weigh 1649 grams.

ZTR grails on Novatec 771/2 hubs and Sapim CX Ray spokes cost me £370, weigh 1600g. From Spokesman wheels.

I've got a set of a year old Light Bicycle UD gloss 24mm carbon rims laced to white Novatec hubs using Pillar spokes that I'm moving on once they come back from my LBS.
I wanted to change all the alloy nipples with brass DT Swiss which is why they're at the LBS.I've since bought a set of CK R45 disc hub'd wheels with Archetype rims in the mean time so the LB are surplus.

The LB wheels weighed in at ~ 1450g with the alloy nipples so will be slightly heavier with the brass, QR front and rear and 28 spokes.

Email in my profile if you are interested.

Jon - have you got/tried any of the JRA wheels? I like their stuff, and they really know their onions, so am keen but live nowhere near to see them in the flesh.

Lightbike?

Never used them myself, but TBH I can't see why you wouldn't go carbon with road disk brakes, unless you're a complete oaf and ride into potholes (which would kill alloy rims anyway).

Grails look good, I've got the original alphas and no complaints other than they look a bit old-skool now. But they're the same weight as Arch-ex, which seems daft for a road wheel compared to an trail/enduro rim!

No doubt they could go lighter, but they're tough.

True, but Arch levels of tough?

It's not a bad weight, same as Archetypes, A23, etc. I'm just surprised that they're 100g heavier than Crests.

I'm looking at getting a Rose CDX3000 which comes the DT Swiss R23 Spline wheelset. supposed to be pretty good but my upgrade would certainly be the Hunt 4 seasons

Nothing to do with the machined aluminium braking surface then?

No idea. All I know is they cope with loaded touring very well indeed. I'm quite happy to take a small weight penalty for that.

I know you said you're not so sure about superstar, but bang for buck they're pretty good. I got myself a pair of the alex atd470 on switch hubs and they're not pad for the £130 I got them for, and they weighed in about 1720g. The other choices look good.

mrchrispy - my brother has the same bike. The splines are good and the GP4000s on his have a noticeably wider profile on the 18mm rims than on the 17mm on my Giant SL1s (suprisingly) but both of us think the freehub is too noisy for road wheels. He is looking to replace them as a result. I wish the Hunt 4 seasons were 18 or even 19mm wide.

Not kinesis V3s. Fragile and brittle alloy nipples and high spoke tensions due to low spoke count are not a brilliant combo. I'm 65kg and I've had at least 3 nipples go pop when I've been dishing out Griepel levels of power 🙄

Been far more impressed by my Superstar with Alex rims combo that were half the price. It's taken me being hit by a car for them to finally need some attention...

They have to be lighter than my Giant OEM disc wheels and a wider profile wouldn't go amiss.

Really wouldn't worry that much about weight (within reason.) Have you weighed the OEM wheels?

Swapped some narrow box section wheels on my training bike for some Archetypes, gained a couple of hundred grams. Much nicer ride now and they carry speed very well.
