I need a large bag (small rucksack) for general commuting duties.
It doesn't need to be particularly cycle friendly (I have panniers for the proper commute).
It needs to be big enough to easily carry a 13" laptop, lunch, umbrella, jumper, books, paperwork etc.
It has to look vaguely smart - not briefcase level but no garish cycling colours.
It needs to have comfy straps since it may have a lot of weight in it.
I've tried searching online but there are just too many choices and I can't really tell how big the bags are. So can anyone recommend anything please?
Have a look at the Osprey Momentum 26. It will be big enough for all your stuff and looks vaguely smart. I use one for commuting to work and has been good since buying it in September.
I use a large, plain black Timbuk2 for that. Commuting and as carry on luggage for trips abroad. When abroad, it becomes both a day bag and a smart* laptop bag for meetings. Also, when in use as a travel bag, has the added benefit that it doesn't scream out, "here's my expensive laptop/camera/etc".
*Smart enough for the international post it note trade, anyway! 😉
I have a chrome messenger in black and white for sale in the classifieds.
Might be a little too courier chic though.
Although it is waterproof, big (I carried 15" lappy, drives, clothes etc no probs)
Apologies if this hard sell is inappropriate.

What about this:

Never used it, just caught my eye.
Thanks all! That Osprey is *exactly* what I was looking for.
I use this Blue Ice pack
http://www.blueice.com/products/en/10-warthog-26l.html
Its a climbers pack, but don't let that put you off, made from super tough cordura, waterproof, never had any leaks at all, all the construction is amazing quality, would have to be for alpine climbing, I think there is a lifetime warranty on it, and it can take a bladder if needed. 26L is big enough for a change of clothes, laptop, food etc, and the padded back is comfy.
Good if you fancy something a bit different. It is Green though..
