I'm investigating the same thing. Bought daughter an i5 with 6gb which I intend to borrow for video editing work. Hope that's enough RAM. Planning a desktop with i7 and 8gb if not.

I'm well impressed with my Samsung Series 7 Chronos, quad core I7 8Gb of RAM with a 1Tb hard disk speeded up with a 8Gb flash drive and Nvidia GT640 Optimus graphics. It's under an inch thick and it embarrasses my old AMD 1075T desktop when it comes to processor grunt.

My wife has just got this:
http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Samsung_700_-_Core_i7-3630QM_16GB_1.5TB_Blu_ray_combo__Nvidia_GTX_675M_2GB__NP700G7C-S02UK/version.asp

It's excellent, has a big screen & fully functional tho', so not lightweight & not cheap - should last years before being outdated though.

Obviously not to everyone's taste, but an Apple MacBookPro + iMovie is a reasonable combo.

From £870 with the educational discount http://store.apple.com/uk_edu_5000751/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook_pro

geoffj - thanks for that! It's helped me work out what price I can get what I want through uni. For anyone buying through the applestore, don't forget to use Topcashback to claim 3.03%.

For anything serious Desktop with a decent monitor or two.

After that a high spec PC will be fine. Look for plenty of Ram (and room for more when it get cheaper) fast processor and probably USB 3 as you will want to be storing the editing vids elsewhere after a while.

17" is much better for viewing & working on IMHO anything better get a desktop. In the end a 10" tablet for viewing and a desktop for editing might be more use.
