Has anyone else noticed the liquid that often pours out the back of a coach? Coming home tonigh the National Express A3 over took me on a hill and I got a bit of spray / splash back from some liquid that was pouring out of a little pipe at the back of the coach. Not a direct hit. More of a splash back as it spattered all over the road.
Does this come from the coach's aircon or is it something more unpleasant?

Probably air con water, else it wouldn't really be allowed and it seems to be pretty common?

Going up the hill?

Most likely toilet overflow.

Did it smell of those nicnac scampi fries?

If it was a small metal hose, slightly bigger than a hosepipe in diameter, it's the condensate from the Aircon/Heating system.

It's only water from the air-con. A coach is like a greenhouse on wheels, so needs a massive air conditioning unit to keep the interior cool. If you've got 50 people on board they produce a fair amount of water vapour.

Coach depots have a special drain in the yard, which the coaches have to park over to empty the toilet.
This takes precious time when the crew have finished for the day and just want to park up and go home, so it's not unknown for the tour guide to pull the plug while on an empty stretch of road on the way back. 😉

it will be condensation from the air con, you need to open a panel at the back of the coach to reach the valve for the toilet.
in the old neoplans, the switch to turn the toilet on was right next to (and looked identical) the drop switch, there must have been many a driver who inadvertently dropped the toilet when he thought he was switching it on.

It's amazing that trains are still allowed to dump the contents of the toilets straight onto the track. I can see how it all gets vapourised and spread out to dry and be sterilised by UV when the train is moving but if someone has a dump at a station, it's awful.
