As it says really. If you have individual bike insurance, for a £5k+ bike, who do you use?

Ideally it should cover trips to Europe as well?

Bikmo for my bikes, only heard good things from those that have claimed and the coverage is much better than others I've looked at. I also like that I can log in, add an upgraded part and change the value of the bike all on the web site and I don't need to phone them up.

House insurance.

Every time I've looked at bike insurance it's been 10% of the value of the bike each year.

House insurance via M&S. So much cheaper than individual policies.

I use Laka for my two bikes. They were really good when I claimed for accidental damage to my carbon road bike. A quick look at bikmo and prices seem a little cheaper at Laka.

I’ve been using Laka. Seems like a good outfit, not claimed yet but reviews are good. If you decide to go for it I can send you a code I think that gets us both a freebie.

My co op household insurance proved lacking when I had the ‘named’ £4k + bike and my wife’s £2.2k bike stolen from home ( both from attached garage) . Settlement offers were utterly rubbish - Halfords vouchers effectively- and after weeks of futile wrangling , took their £4k offer.
Not sure now who’s the biggest thief; ****s who broke in or those pushing the pens.

further question, are the specific insurers new for old or do they take chunks off for age? my biked have decent kit on them like xtr, hope, king etc... but are several years old. would cost a lot to replace like for like.

this is mostly a question for those that have actually had to claim

Those that are saying home insurance who are you using that covers £5k+? Ours has a 3k limit so we’re using someone else for the e-bikes (can’t remember who, my wife sorted it).

Pedalcover home insurance with my bike named on the policy. It worked out cheaper than my previous home insurer which didn’t have the bike named.

I looked for individual bike insurance but found there were so many requirements. Ended up using M&S bank for home, contents, and bike insurance. Spoke to them a few times and they don't specify specific locks or anything like that. Also very good value.

When I was with Aviva I wrote off tne frame and forks of my Condor. Offered me the full replacement cost, less tne excess, by return. I pointed out I'd paid extra for custom paint and provided an estimate from the LBS for tbe cost of swapping parts to a new frame and they just added it to the settlement.

Money in my account in a week

If you can't cover it on house insurance for a sensible premium, a good lock and not leaving it in dodgy places is a decent alternative. And if it did get nicked, well that would just be a good excuse for a new one. As if I needed a good excuse.

I used Mucoff recently, well it’s nextgen under another label but it was cheaper than nextgen direct. I found it the best cover for the price and includes euro cover.

If people are after specifics, bikmo cover costs me around 3.3% per annum of the value of the bikes covered.

The cover when away from home is far far better than any home policy I've seen. They cover for racing, which many policy's won't, so if it nicked whilst attending a race it's covered (as long as the T&C's are met - don't leave you bike locked to the outside of your car etc.).

You also get a 10% discount if your a British cycling member, which in my case at least, is greater than the BC membership fee.

a good lock is a decent alternative.

This is a requirement for all insurance anyway 🤷‍♂️

I don’t race, so that's not an issue for me luckily.

I've not found an insurance compliant lock i would carry on a ride, so just accept that risk and take other precautions. I realise that with current prices, I probably wouldn't be able to afford to replace the more expensive bikes if they were taken, but that's my choice.

Used to be Co-op but there limits changed, and my add-on policy was stopped as they wern't doing expensive bikes. I'm still with Co-Op, but I've taken out the bike only bit of Barclay's Home Insurance for £10 a month covering the bikes over £3k.

I just had my two bikes (Camino Al R1 and a old Orange 5 Pro) nicked recently and as they were named on my home policy paid out in full (old for new)

As mentioned above, M&S insurance does not specify a lock, so any will do. They do require the bike to be locked to a fixed object. I gave up with Pedal Cover because they required a sold secure gold lock.

Putting it on my home insurance doesn't cost any extra and covers bikes up to £5K without specifying them. Money I save over an expensive policy can go toward topping up any replacement costs.

I am lucky, I can park my bike inside at work. At home, I can walk to the town centre. I wouldn't risk it even with an expensive lock.

Another M+S insured over here. You insure to your most expensive, all rest covered.

As mentioned above, M&S insurance does not specify a lock, so any will do.

A quick Google of their insurance pamphlet, while they don't specify a lock type they do say the bike should be 'properly secured' that would suggest suitable lock for the bikes value to me, can't just be a cafe lock. Gold, silver or bronze sold secure lock. The t&c's would say more id guess....

We’ll only cover against the theft of pedal cycles

if they’re properly secured when unattended

Anyone using a cheap cafe lock on a 5k bike is pretty silly. Even for 5 mins. Just foolish.

I just tried Bikmo for a quote and for full race level it was £1800 in a low crime area. £1500 for normal. My home insurance including named bikes is £680.

I asked them re this when I took out a policy with them.

They have no lock standard requirements, eg any lock will do.
