At the weekend eldest son banged his RD on a rock and bent his mech hanger. Not a problem, I'd ordered two last time he did this so we'd have a spare in the house.

Can I find it? (Ans; of course not).

So off I trot to the Canyon website to get hanger #29. Its an unusual one as it as combination of a thru axel and a QR skewer, and as far as I can tell is only used on the Canyon Nerve AL 6.0.

On their website, can I find it? (Ans; surprisingly, no I can't)

So a quick google shows that some of the CNC hanger providers do sell it - but at £40 a pop (or they are out of stock at slightly lower prices).

A quick email to Canyon this morning, and they appear to be supplying ones for me.

But what happens when this hanger is no longer manufactured by Canyon, and perhaps the CNC providers aren't bothering to produce any more? Would that make the entire frame worthless, without buying a new wheelset?

Short of buying a job lot of these things, how can I protect against obsolescence?

I had that with my old bike.
got the file and the hack saw out and made one. Took a couple of hours stood at the vice. but it has been in service for nearly 3 years now.

Cheers, I must admit I hadn't looked at Superstar, but fairly sure they don't have it - the part is this one http://pilo.co.il/d564-derailleur-hanger-for-canyon-aka-29#.V3EoofkrK70

I'll email them though to see if they ever plan on stocking it!

Fit one of these before he does it again

[img] [/img]

Or single speed it afterwards

There are universal hangers that fit to the axle. Maybe one of those will work.

If you want to end up bending the dropout / frame, fill your boots.

Yes, I know they are out there. It's just that it surprised me that when I got one last time direct from Canyon at 14 Euros each (steep, but affordable) and that they were for a current bike (I believe the 2016 Nerve AL 6.0 has the same odd hanger) that I couldn't find one on their site, and it made me wonder what I might do if it did ever come to pass that I couldn't get a hanger for a £1000 bike. I can convert the frame to a thru axel for a better wheelset I think, which (in the context of £40 for a hanger) might be a better value option some day!

Buy two when you can so you can always have one as a template for a local machine shop to reverse engineer one for you.

Is it really something worth worrying about? I've only bent 1 mech hanger ever.

I got fed up of cracking the monkey-metal dropouts on my Hemlock, so I got a STW member (not naming him in case he's not interested in doing more) to make me some better ones. Win!

TBH it's incredibly shit of manufacturers though, if you sell a product you need to commit to basic aftersales.

Worth worrying about? Yes, this is the second hanger he's gone through in six months...

But joy of joys, the spare hanger I'd ordered last time turned up in sons stock drawer so back up and running and we can wait for canyon to get stock in.

BETD used to offer a custom service if you sent them your bent/broken one.
it does look like you'll need to fork out for one of the more expensive CNC varieties though.
One thing I did like about the cheapy budget bikes, they all had the same hangers that cost about £7.

I would just make another one. Simple enough job. No, I am not interested in making them for any one else because I don't want to listen to you moan about how expensive it would be.

LOL! If only I had such skills to craft something such as this.

I think its such a niche piece (only fits one model of the Nerve) that there just isn't much demand for it from the aftermarket suppliers.

As an aside, Canyon got back to me very quickly and said they'd order some. Then I got the paperwork from this morning on this, and it turns out they'd ordered the wrong one themselves (I think they got confused as I needed Hanger #29 for a Nerve and they thought I needed a hanger for a 29er Nerve...)

Let's see what the next exchange of emails turns up...

We at BETD can make "one off's" but sadly it's not cheap. Have you checked our website? Please send me an email to paul@betd.co.uk and if you even have the broken parts we will do our best to sort you out. We need images both sides too. Don't give up yet.

Bit of aluminium plate and a hacksaw and drill.
Or use those things that go on cheap mechs and fix with the wheel nut

The answer?

OK, they're expensive, but you'll still be using it in 15 years and it's not going to leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere.

Buy once and save.

Good luck getting hold of the new spares - if you get one, it belongs in your backpack, not in a drawer.

P.S. why are there so many designs of hanger - smells of profiteering to me, as there can't be the need for so many dropout designs, surely? (Not that I know anything about bike design, of course)

Cheers - by going through Canyon directly it seems I've got three of them winging their way to me. Odd they aren't on the website though for sale.

ref. keeping on in the backpack - my sentiment exactly, I had put it in previously for son to use, but I think over time he'd cleared out his pack and put stuff "safe" elsewhere. Plus on that evening anyway we'd only gone a couple of miles from home for a 20 minute blast, so no packs present!!

I've hung onto the old hangers too, as whilst they are not good, they are at least usable in an emergency.

Back in the 2000's I broke a mech hanger on a Mountain Cycle San Andreas, no problem I thought, I'll order another. This was in the June and it turned out that Mtn Cycle had gone belly up in the Feb/March.
None available anywhere, bespoke for that frameset so no-one seemed to be making pattern copies. I ended up getting a bloke I knew in a machine shop to do a short run of cnc'd replacements, I think I got three just in case. The cost wasn't hideous as it was an out of hours job and it got me back on the bike.(took about eight weeks from broken to fixed during a REALLY nice summer!)
Huge PITA though!
