Just arrived in Phoenix with a somewhat bruised bike box and the cassette (still attached to the freehub body) loose in the box.

It's a road bike wheel with a thru-axle. It's fairly obvious how it goes back together but I'm surprised that it came apart in the first place. Does it really rely on the thru axle holding the whole freehub body in place?

As it stands the whole lot can easily be pulled apart and reassembled by hand.

Thoughts and advice much appreciated. May plan a ride past a bike shop for their considered opinion, especially since the whole lot is insured against baggage handlers in a bad mood.

It’ll be an o-ring in the end cap which usually has enough pressure to hold everything in place. The thru axle then applies force to the end caps.

It’s never a problem unless you have the wheel off the bike and drop it on it’s side. Plenty of brands have this design (Hope, Stans etc).

Stick a cable tie though the hub and end caps when your coming home to keep it all together.

Thanks! All seems normal now it's back together. Cursing the baggage handlers at Heathrow though, my bike box looks like someone's driven over it with a 747.

How do you know it's the Heathrow ones and not the Phoenix ones?
