I've always thought about stopping and climbing it.

I think the big lump you refer to is the edge of the mendips

On the left, and kind of pointy, is Crook Peak - part of the Mendip Ridge and rideable. On the right, is Brent Knoll - very round and no real bike access... Guessing you mean Crook Peak anyway - it certainly catches the eye.

It must be this one! It is on its own, what makes it very spectacular from the car perspective!

Perhaps Crook Peak, at the end of the Mendips. Last time I was there the riding was OK, but not really a highlight of the Mendips.

yup, brent knoll, on it's own and nothing really there for riding where as Crooks Peak, gives good access to the Mendips which is sodding brilliant riding - as long as it's dryish!

Oh, many thanks for the links! Yeah, it was Brent Knoll the one I meant! But Crooks Peak is now the one I want to visit next weekend... 8)

I'd recommend starting at Crooks peak, riding the ridge towards Winscombe and over to Lillypools farm shop for some local cider and food. then onwards towards Longbottom farm where you can join Shipham / Roeberrow woods and head up to Beacons batch to ride the Clic 24 loop.
A grand day out to be had

I camped at Longbottom Farm at the weekend (known as Mendip Camp). Very basic facilities but a lovely spot, and open fires encouraged too. www.mendipcamp.co.uk

brent knoll 🙂 can see it from the edge of my street. i climbed it and rode my old bike down the north-east side towards east brent, quite a blast! but not really worth the effort.. there's only one steep footpath up, and its technically a normal footpath. so not legal..

as above.. the man made trails around beacon batch are very technical. ride with a group of locals there about once a month. there's some nice singletrack up behind burrington too. not made it up crooks peak yet, but its on mt wishlist.

There was an 11 acre plot with large barn just before that campsite up for sale last year. Really wanted to buy it and build a new farmhouse with walker/cyclist camping only up at the top of the field with fantastic views. Guy wanted £200k and it is AONB so would have been a huge risk.

Never been up Brent Knoll, keep meaning to but will probably do Brean Down first.

There is a bridleway up the west side of Crook Peak but it's a bit steep for going up and good and technical on the way down. There is technically no riding down the long diagonal (SE) but it is fun to do once or twice, just watch out for the warden, be considerate to walkers and stop in plenty of time as they have now fitted some fencing at the bottom which is very effective at stopping cyclists. More rewarding than the main decent is the bit just after the fence making your way down to the small parking area right by the corner of the road.

Heading east over Wavering down is a killer though and there is now a bridleway over the north edge of Shute Shelf over to the lillypool cafe and then onto the rest of the mendips. Good ride.

As a kid, used to believe Brent Knoll was an extinct volcano (millions of years ago etc). Sure I read that somewhere. Probably rubbish.

and more doable with a bike.. instead of the obvious steps up go 100 yards to the right and there's a gentler tarmac slope up.. walk/ride to the fort on the fire road on the back edge, climb up the grass on the way back after exploring the fort and if on bike be treated to a fast grass downhill from the trig point with optional (and super fun) natural jumps

The road access from the motorway side hits 1 in 5 at one point. Went up a few times whilst working down that way.
