Tapered headset. On One Smoothie Mixer. Or the Superstar version. IIRC Nuke Proof do a reasonably cheap one too, and Hope do an expensive one.

There's something to be aware of though, let me just find the link...

What forks do you have? If they are Rockshox you need to read this first:

http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/interesting-headset-problem-tapered-steerer-carbon-456

Basically the there's no international standard for the LENGTH of the taper on the forks, and the C456 has a VERY short headtube. This causes the headset taper ring to bottom out on the top of the taper so you can't tighten it down properly. The current fix is a thicker crown race to effectively shorten the steerer. It works.

Very soon a new website will be launching to help with just this kind of issue:

www.willitfitmybike.com

Launch date will be May 18th (with a good tail wind!), and it'll be a compatibility database for headset, bb's seatposts and rear hubs - the stuff that directly connects to the frame. More components will follow soon after.

Cheers,
James

I have the superstar one - was lighter and came with both crown races and bearings are only £7 each.

But...I kind of wish I had gone for the On One version now as it is better sealed. SS claimed labyrinth seal on their specs but there is none on the crown race.

If you go for the on one it will cost a lot more though as they are now £45 and then you have to buy the tapered crown race on top of that. maybe call them and ask them to send the tapered one instead of the normal one?

WRT to the 16" frame issue - Stevo sent me the longer crown races but they need modifying to work with the superstar headset so I will wait for them to bring out the external cup upper.

What size frame are you going for?

The SHIS code you need is:

Top cup: ZS 44 28.6
With a tapered fork, your bottom cup will need to be: EC 49 40

Sorry to be all tecky about it! Once the website is up and running, you'll be able to tell it what bike you've got and it'll tell you all the headsets that will fit your bike, and where you can buy them.

Best of luck finding one in the mean time,
James

Easygirl, the top cup is not the normal 1 1/8th standard. It is a zerostack type with 44mm diamter so larger than a normal 1 1/8th headset.

if the 209g of the on one headset is fine with you I would go with it.

Oh and NO that nukeproof wont fit. it is for a 44mm headtube top and bottom. The bottom of the headtube larger.

on more thing, you really want to stick near the lower cup stack that on one use - ie about 12-14mm as changing this will mess with the angles.

What size frame? If 16" I would seriously get the on one headset as they are sending out a new upper cup to increase the stack height.

Superstar that fits and has both crown races: http://superstar.tibolts.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=25&products_id=425

On One: http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/HSOOSMTAPER/on-one-smoothie-mixer-tapered-headset

also the Chis King above and Hope do one but you need to ask for one for a tapered fork - ie this but without the lower step down: http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/HSHOCOMBI/hope-combi-headset-(integral--step-down)

Crikey, just saw on one are now charging £45 for the headset and £20 for a crown race - yikes! The superstar is now only £33. My only issue with it is the lack of external seal on the crown race like you get on some headsets but pack it with grease and it will be fine.

I believe this is the FSA for tapered forks and headtube: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=41914

and no, not a good way to start out an advice website! 😆

Same answer I will always give unless something drastic changes. Chris King. Unless you need an angle set I cant see the pojnt in using something else.

Had one in every frame now since I bought the first over a decade ago.

Still have a 10+ year old one which I have never serviced and is still smooth as silk.

I have used them in DH bikes with no issues and with long travel single crowns with none of the scoring issues.

Doh! That's why you need a website not a human, takes human error out of it! Good point andyl, that nukeproof one is 44mm top and bottom, mis-read my own info!

As I originally said ZS4428.6 | EC4940

There are loads of them out there but if it was me, I'd stick to the On-One and keep it all in house:

but you'll also need this:

http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/HSOOSMCROWAL/on-one-smoothie-mixer-alu-crown-race-for-15-steerer

or this:

http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/HSOOSMCROW/on-one-smoothie-mixer-stainless-steel-crown-for-15-steerer

to go with it. Hope that helps!
James
