They use an integrated (IS), tapered headset - i.e. the bearings are pushed directly into the frame (rather than with additional cups).

What you are looking for is IS41/28.6 (top) and IS52/40 (bottom).

What's your budget? Should be plenty of options.. I think I have a Cane Creek 110 in mine, or you could get a Hope Pick'n'Mix etc.

Cane creek Hellbender 70 in mine. The stock builds come with the cheap Cane Creek 40 series.

Hope FTW. They do their pick n mix range and have a top and buttom cup suitable. You need cup 7 and cup J.

Careful with hope, they do two types of IS41, you need the Campy-style one for Santa Cruz

thanks, guys got the hellbender, it was actually the hope site that confused me they have great diagrams etc but I got totally lost in them, thanks for all of your help it's appreciated.
While you guys are here be interested to know what fork and shock combo you run on the Hightower? I'm on the lookout for a fork at the moment but torn between 140 /150 and even 160.

Are you talking the 'old' hightower or the new one? On my 'old' one I have Pikes @150 and a Fox X2.

2017 first gen I believe, I hadn't given the Hightower much thought I went from tallboy LTC (the best bike I have ever owned) to a tall boy v3, I realised pretty swiftly that the v3 was an altogether different bike, I then came across the Hightower which looks to be pretty much an updated tallboy lt, I rode 145 mm pikes on that, which was about perfect for me, I had heard that the x2 works really well on the frame?

I had a 160 Fox36 and X2 on mine when I had it.
I also got it after a Tallboy LTc.
