So floowing on from my previous thread about buying the right Zee, I thought I would have a go at the 10speed Zee clutch rear mech on a 9 speed set up using a 9 speed Sram shifter, done the spacer thing & it does shift fine (ish), but what's with the short cage?
No matter what I try I cant get decent tension on the chain in the lowest rear sprocket. I'm running 11-34 rear with 33 upfront & as fewer links as will allow me to get in to the 33-34 combo.
So have I done something fundamentally wrong or do you never get proper tension on the lower chain with 11-34 spread & the clutch magically does its thing?

FWIW it didn't derail on the maiden voyage, but then I never had a chain derail before using the Xo mech until it decided to do it three times on one ride earlier this week.

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Cheers.

Which Zee did you go for? The FR?

In my experience it depends what frame you're using it on, and the geometry of the dropout (I think related to the position of the 'notch' on the hanger). Provided that you have taken out as many links as possible then there isn't much you can do. You can try adjusting the B-Tension screw although I didn't find this made much difference.

On my full sus the Zee FR works perfectly. On my Hardtail I had the same problem you describe. No other drivetrain changes at all. Bizarre.

For what it's worth, I think the Zee mech is a poor product - One of very few from Shimano. It clearly works for most people, but there are a significant proportion of buyers that, for whatever reason, can't get the product to work properly. Having said that, now it's working (for me) I'm quite happy with it.

I had a similar issue. After some advice was sought on forums, it seemed that I fluffed mounting the derailleur correctly. The small knob on the derailleur needs to point backwards where you mount onto hanger. That sorted my chain tension.

Thanks both, I bought the FR, I'm going to look into it some more this evening as I did fit it in a hurry last night before a ride, has anyone seen any decent set up videos that helped?

Cheers.

Is your chain too long? Have you adjusted the B limit screw?

Incorrect. Clearly see the small black knob at the derailleur fixing point. This should be pointed back not down. Resulting in this. Slack chain.

Easily fixed when mounted correctly.

Thanks again, I have looked & the link is facing backwards not down, so that bit is right. I'm to tired to try & sort it tonight so I'll have a go on Sunday. The problem is not as bad as the pic above & it seems there is enough tension for the chain not to derail, its just the chain is not quite tight on the bottom & will waggle about an inch.

Thanks again, I will update if I manage to sort it.

Cheers.
