Getting a new set of bearings for my bike and want to pack them out to make sure there's plenty of grease in to improve longevity.
So what's the best grease to use?

Always got on just fine with silkolene rg2 but about to try the maxima stuff. Looks very similar but blue rather than red.

I have got some Finish Line stuff in a white-ish tube. Works well and I've had it for ages, although that's probably more a reflection of my bike maintenance schedule!

Phil Wood grease from Tim at Sideways is the best so far. Exus, Silkolene, et all, now getting dusty......

Marine grease. End of.

Take it from the Enduro bearing guys. "water resistant or marine grease" they say. http://www.pinkbike.com/news/To-the-Point-Cartridge-Bearings-2013.html

That Lithium stuff above... every time someone mentions lithium grease usually it's a big "no!" response. So here's my "no!". Except I don't know for sure why, I'm just echoing what others say. Something about it eating rubber seals.

This for me.

I think the thing about the seals and most greases is that is you grease up the seals the have a tendency to pop off and let the dirt and water in rather than do their job. So long as you keep the seals dry I don't think there are any issues.

As an FYI. This is what Santa Cruz used in the old style grease guns.

http://www.crcindustries.com/ei/product_detail.aspx?id=SL3184

Aluminium complex instead of lithium like a lot of them are. Apparently ali complex is more waterproof than lithium.

Damned if I can find the stuff in the UK though, and Santa Cruz have stopped selling it. They only do the new grease gun and tiny tube of toothpaste style grease of unknown origin. That said, their SC guy in the Pinkbike video seems to use Phil Wood stuff, but can I find that in the UK? Nah. Shame as there's a cartridge version of it also which would fit my original SC grease gun (though that gun is fairly crap).

Rock and Roll Super Slick is what I use. Seems to stick to the bearings better than anything else I've tried. The marine stuff I got wasn't great in that regard.

Super Slick works pretty well in fork/shock seals as well.
