Quick one - need a grease gun. Doesn’t have to be massive as it’s for general bike greasing duties.
Anyone have any recs?
Depends on how you buy grease.
If you buy it in threaded tubes then whatever compatible gun your grease brand suggests works with their tubes.
If you buy it in dirty great tubs then the Dualco style refillable ones are a great bet and fairly indestructible.
Refilling them and getting the air out is a bit of an art but once you've mastered it you're good for the foreseeable.
I have the Park GG which is effectively Dualco painted blue and for me it's one of those tools that if it ever broke or got lost I'd immediately order another identical one.
Kinda as above, although I don't really see the point of a grease gun when working on bikes.
a) With a couple of notable exceptions, components and pivots don't have grease nipples.
b) Most people end up using different greases in different places anyway.
c) There's actually a downside to using them on anything other than nipples as dirt gets stuck in the tip, but when attached to the nipple that get's purged out round the outside as you push it on and fresh grease goes into the machine when you pull the lever. If you just use it to dispense grease like toothpaste then the first squeeze is always just the sand and grit from your toolbox.
For the cars and motorbikes I've got a generic gun I've had for a couple of decades, it was probably cheap and I doubt it has a brand on it.
For the push bikes I just use a spatula (or screwdriver) dipped into which ever tub I need grease from.
If you want to feel pro, buy expensive branded bike grease in the toothpaste tubes and you can get the thread on guns cheap from ali-express rather than costing more than the already expensive grease itself.
My ghetto solution (after getting fed up my spatula and finger):
I plonked a 20ml syringe deep into my tub of NLGI2 grease, and just pulled the plunger (hard). It filled up surprisingly quickly in my rather hot shed. YMMV in winter.
There's a bit of mess to deal with after, but it can all be put back in the tub.
Loving the hack.
you can get the thread on guns
I have got one of these, problem is that I cross-threaded the tube like a lemon and as they’re made of soft plastic, that’s it rogered…
I use a big 50/60ml syringe. Sucks up XHP222 easily. Came with a storage cap and a thin nozzle attachment.
I like my Dualco grease guns. I like that the grease is clean and neatly applied, open tubs is workshops with toothbrushes in them often end up with grit etc in them and grease on the handles.
