700c.. 12x100 and 12x142..

For gravel and touring essentially.

I'm normally running some retro kinesis CX wheels.. but I'm upgrading the fork on my Tripster to a bolt through, and getting the bolt through adaptor for the frame, so will be time for new gravel wheels (my road wheels can be adapted).

THoughts at present:

Hunt 35 carbon things - about £670

Hunt 4 season gravel..can be had for £275 but a few hundred gm heavier..

I WAS looking at the DT swiss 1800s on CRC, but the hub pickup bothers me and they are heavier still, though for another £80 i could get the ratchet upgrade..

Any other bargains to look out for?

1600g / £500

Sigma are offering £25 off on orders over £250, not sure if it applies to discounted items but worth a punt.

Vel 35 GRL at Sigmasports? I've been using the 650B version this year and had no issues. Pick-up is good and the freewheel has a buzz rather than a rattle.

Ha! Beaten to it

For unglamorous fit and forget I’m very happy with my Hope 20fives. I believe that the new pro5 hubs have faster pick up.

I have the first two wheel sets on your list.

Dunno what you're planning on taking with you touring, but the carbon have a massive weight limit (140kg).

I haven't got on well with the carbon, it's a ball ache to fit tyres (every time) and I had to send the rear back after a few 100kms as the nipples had cracked - they have replaced the nipples with brass. I'm not light( but 15-20% under limit loaded on the bike), or particularly gentle on wheels, but I'd have expected better. I also have a bit of a taping issue with them, I don't know what it is, but they often seem to leak through the tape or valve and air comes gushing out of the drain holes when first fitting tyres - took ages ages to set up, but that is probably my cackhandedness. Will see how I get on in the next few months before I decide if they are worth the hassle or not.

By contrast, I've two sets of 4 season Superdura wheels (I guess those are the ones you're looking at) which have been faultless, done gravel and road touring with them, and whilst I've been on the weight limit a couple of times they have performed well.

It seems quite hard to get DT Swiss wheels with 32 holes & decent rims, I used to have a great set but they were unconvertible QR so they are on the wife's occasional bike now.

If you've got a decent wheel builder in your local area it's worth a chat to see what they can build for you.

Cheers..

I'm only 72kg, so weight limits aren't really an issue...

My local wheel builder mate is actually the Hunt wheel builder too!

I think for the cost, I'm kinda tempted with teh Hunt 4 season gravel...

I was planning to get a set of JRA monitor wheels which seem a good balance of weight/price/width, ended up with some cheapo Prime wheels instead though.

I've had a set of Hunt 4 seasons on my gravel bike for the past year and a bit. Except for the disc adaptors very occasionally needing tightening up (note to self, use threadlock...) and after about 2000kms of South Downs/KAW/Dunoon Dirt Dash on and off-road abuse the rear needed a slight truing back in September, but otherwise,  no complaints. Also the fact that Hunt are based in Partridge Green (about 15miles from me) means anything serious requiring sending  back to the manufacturer would be easy to sort out.

Another Hunt user with explosive nipples here...

I've got RS3s that I built on to i21KOMs with brass nipples and DT competition spokes. They've been totally fit and forget.

I’ve been running those DT G1800s for ages. No issues so don’t discount them.

fitwheels.eu for dtswiss stuff. Not sure how many gravel options.

Got two pairs of hunts which seem ok. Had some JRA wheels in the past which I really liked.

Mavic Allroad SLs? Very happy with mine, but I do have another set of wheels for 'proper' gravel. Dunno about weight limits though.
