Thinking about buying a bar mounted GPS doofer to aid with exploration and trying new routes.

What's good out there? Something primarily for nav, with maps and decent screen, bar mounted, sturdy and (ideally) not too pricey.

Ta!

We use an etrex 20 with cheapo os type maps on it. Rugged, takes aa batteries seems to work fine. May be considered old tech nowadays but a good basic unit.

Reflecting on ownership of a Garmin GPS62s & latterly a Viewranger equipped smartphone I'd take the smartphone every day of the week. Creating routes can be done on both but much simpler on the phone & the graphical interface on the Garmin is 20 years out of date. I'f you've got a suitable phone Viewranger is hard to beat. The 25 quid annual subscription gets 4 separate log-on's. That & a Quadlock mount and your golden.

Yep I have a phone with Viewranger which is ace, but it's a pain to use in the rain, I'm always a bit worried about battery, don't really fancy strapping it to my phone... Just exploring options I guess.

The eTrex's look good, shame they're touchscreen!

Well, the GPS 62s can be had on fleabay for about a ton. The wee handlebar bracket can be bought separately for a couple of quid each. It's all operated by buttons as opposed to touchscreen. Solid unit, takes a couple of double AA's which last about a day. Easy to load up with GPX files, only downside is the size of the display which is about the size of a matchbox. Also has the benefit of an SD card slot to load up OS maps if they don't come bundled with the device.
