Is he a smartphone user? Buy viewranger and a complete set of uk 1:50k maps

I use a garmin GPSmap 62ST I needed it for my geology work but its brilliant tough as anything and massively accurate. I take it with the full uk maps walking, running, biking and best of all geocaching.

Depends what He wants to use it for. Personally, I'd go for the cheapest garmin. It goes in the bottom of my bag and only used in poor weather. I don't want my map reading skills to perish or become too reliant on technology. Mapping software's pretty cool though and great for printing off the area I'll be in. Full OS in the bag though.

Satmap Active 10. Does the job for me. Fits on the bike too and can be read on the move without too much grief.

Garmin eTrex 20 or 30. The 10 doesn't support mapping but allows you to plot a route. It doesn't have much memory either, whereas the others have an SD card slot.

The Garmin Dakota is very similar, but touch screen. If I remember right, the Dakota 20 is closer to the eTrex 30.

Satmap Active 10. Only gripe is it can be difficult to read in bright sunlight (might be the same for other makes). Joint 1.25/1.50 maps of the Yorkshire Dales & Lake District were a bit pricy at £100+ each. Toggles between the two which I like a lot. Can also be used on the bike too.

If you want to view OS maps on it (or if he has poor eyesight), worth considering something with a bigger screen. ie the Garmin Oregon 450 or Montana 600.

Etrex H if you can still get it. Use it to confirm location via grid ref if required and nav off map and compass... Proper nav like 🙂
