I've just switched to some Wellgo B47 pedals after a few years on SPDs.
They're working absolutely fine with whatever I have on my feet at the time. When there's a bit of spare cash about I could probably do with something waterproof, but for now my £10 TK Maxx Airwalks are great.

I have both Five Ten Sam Hills and Shimano AM41s. The Five Tens are solid, very sticky soled and warm. The Shimanos less so - you get a bit more flex in the sole and they are probably more suited to light rides and warmer days (though I find them pretty good in light rain too, owing to the big flap across the top). Both very comfortable. I use Superstar Nanos.

My local "pikey" sports outlets all seem to sell flat-soled Vans for 30-40 quid.

The ones I bought even have what suspiciously look like an extra tread where your feet sit on the pedals, surely they can't be selling a bike-specific shoe for only 30 quid wtf !!!

Oh, and don't get suckered into the believeing you need to buy £100 sticky/tacky soles to stop your feet flying off the pedals 😆
