The self steer of the kenda jugganughts is not nice.

So what should I replace the front of my Dune with?

Mainly local Bristol trails, FOD and surrounds and mainly 3 seasons.

Choices seam to be either Jumbo Jims or Minion FBF or something else?

Thanks

I've always just run Surly Nates, all year round.

They just work, top up the sealant every month or so and I never get any issues.

My Cube came with 4.4" JJs. They work just fine for all 4 seasons. I've also bought another pair for when these eventually die.

4.8 JJs 4 seasons for me. Brechfa, welsh mountains and the occasional coed-y-Brenin trip.

Cool. JJs it is.
I reckon a 4.8 should easily fit on the std rims and fork.

If going tubeless? Should I get the 60 or 120tpi?

As someone fat curious. Do these tyre perform in slop? I’ve always looked at the profile and never thought they’d be good for winter rides.

If you mean liquid mud, then JJs don’t work at all - they don’t cut through it. That’s about the only stuff I find a fat bike performs worse than a skinny bike.

Depends on the consistency and depth.

4.8 JJ is a whole different animal to the 4.0, way better in the mud. And yep 4.8s will fit no stress in a Dune. (I don't think it looks as nice but it works great) Always worth going for the higher tpi option on fatbikes imo, suppleness means less drag. But the liteskin is imo too light for trail use, it tears up very easily.

I settled on a Minion FBF on the front and a Jim on teh back, both 4.8. The difference in front end grip is pretty big, but I think this is a lot just about where you ride- I basically ride mine everywhere I ride normal bikes, and not really anywhere I don't, so for the golfy and the like you kind of need more grip than a JJ can do! But for more typical fatbike trailriding, it'd be good, but the JJ 4.8 would also be good enough.

I do have a FBR but it's a fair bit slower and I don't often have a problem with the rear grip, since fatbikes are also good and stable if they slide or if you have to paddlesteamer through mud, so I've pretty much stopped using it.

Oh yeah and tubeless- absobloodylutely, but it is a bit of a faff on stock Dune rims. Worth it imo but it took a few tries to get it to work (split 24 inch tubes and some foam worked, I switched to a foam-and-electrical-tape monstrosity to ditch weight which worked grand but was probably more hassle than it was worth, the tubes are a better option overall I reckon).

Tubeless is awesome for fatbikes imo- less drag again, less weight, even without the puncture protection it's ace (and pumping up a fatbike tyre with a mini pump is an effort- especially if it doesn't want to pop onto the bead and you end up having to inflate it to higher pressure so it does)

If you go tubes, don't get the AV10DH that everyone recommends, get the cheaper lighter AV10. It's the absolute perfect size, you just need to be a little careful cutting it.

That's what I found today. They don't 'perform' but at trundling speed, I was able to ride through stuff my 29er with 2.4s would sunk right into.

Regarding TPI ,I have always thought that having a pliable sidewall would be exacerbate self steer.

I've found my Surly Edna to be a great all round front, only swapping to a Bud in full winter mud for a deeper stronger grip. Would recommend Edna for mixed general use.

The stock Surly Nates are heavy, they are just 27tpi. I replaced them on my wife's bike with a set of Ednas: very similar tread; about 500g lighter per tyre; 4.3" rather than the 3.8" of the Nates. 60tpi I think.

Fat bike tyres in slop is probably their achilles heel, you just don't cut through to anything solid. You do get good at comedy dismounts!

Northwood - you got me second doubting and thinking the Minion FBF is the way to go if Im not planning to ever swap out.

And the AV10 tubes. They are shrader? So you have to pop a sidewall to get the sealent in?

TBH self steer seems to be entirely about whether the tyre's good or not (and whether you've got it at a pressure it likes). Like, a Bud is self-steery as all hell if there's too much air in it, for some resaon.

I was hoping someone would say the self steering on the jugs would go away as the tire wore in a bit. Mine still has the furry things on 3/4 of it.

Pity as ther must be alot of them floating around on stock Dunes.

I guess I can keep it as a spare rear.

Yes, my wife's fat bike is a Wednesday (either small or xtra small) and the Edna fits in fine. Here's the link about me swapping things - https://bearbonesbikepacking.co.uk/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=13272&p=165550&hilit=wednesday#p165286
