[Closed] What Fairly Standard XC Wheels for Local Racing?

I've decided I'd like to enter a few local xc races this Summer. I mainly only use my road bike these days but the plan is to train on the road bike and race my mountain bike.

My mountain bike is a 2009 budget hardtail, but I've stuck some better forks on and it has a decent drivetrain too so should be fine I think.

I'd like to upgrade the wheels though and am wondering if anybody has any suggestions?

I don't want to spend much money and they don't have to be incredible or anything- ideally no more than £150.

Are there any really obvious, go-to models I should look at? I don't really want to spend loads of time looking into this so happy to go for a meat and potatoes brand that just does the job.

I'm after 26" but not sure what rim width I would need? Is there any way to determine this? Is there anything else I need to consider?

Current wheels weigh 4620g combined so I'm assuming I can improve on this for the money??

Any help much appreciated!

Biggest bang for buck will be tyres. I'd rather spend £60 on some light tyres for racing - Rocket Rons or something, than £150 and wrap them in cheap and heavy tyres.

Put the £90 you save towards some better wheels in the future.

Hmm, I take your point about tyres but I'll have some decent tyres to fit on as well..

Any other suggestions from anybody?

Superstar? Usually a good deal kicking about.

I got some crests on switch hubs a while back for that sort of money and they've been great.

superstar components would be a good bet, or something from on-one if they have any offers.

Second hand Stans Crest, Alpine or Podium MMX on any old hub would do the job. My old Alpine/ Hope Pro II wheels were around 1450g and there are certainly a lot lighter hubs out there, although Hopes are reliable and keep the price down. If I hadn't of taken them apart to reuse the hubs elsewhere I wouldn't have had a problem selling for the OP's budget

You could be in luck. I've got some Crests on pro2 evo's and some American classic XC and have been trying to decide all day which to sell.

I could probably sell you the Crests for £150 posted.

Unless anyone tells me I should be selling on the AC's!

edit: just checked the shed - I can throw in used Nic/Ralph combo in for £170 all in if you like.

Bargain-tastic

😕 Maybe an idea to train on both

I'll just do as I please, thanks.

Cheers for the recommendations everyone, I will take a look at Superstar, forgot about them to be fair.

Kryton- sounds tempting actually, let me have a think and get back to you...
