I bought a pair of Bontrager cranks and external BB from someone on here a year or more ago, and that's been spinning away happily on my SS, which gets pretty much daily usage, without a peep out of it, and it gets stomped pretty hard. I do believe it's a Truvative GXP one, but if it packed up I think I'd go for a Hope one meself.

Hope's a good option as when bearings run out you can whack new ones in! Acros are really nice looking too; http://www.wheelspincycles.com/products.php?plid=m2b71s110p0

I'd have said shimano, but then my own (from an SLX) has already lasted well over twice as long as yours without issues, including winter riding, not sure whether I'm lucky or you're unlucky.

anything so long as it is rebuildable and you can get spares.

just got an acros myself, very nice and 2 yr warranty.
