I always thought 'multi terrain bike' (add, the French is VTT - velo tout terrain).

And that MounTain Bike was an incorrect view on the MTB abbreviation...

Thoughts?!

MounTain Bike here. Although this is the first time I've ever thought the mnemonic through, and I now realise that it irritates me greatly. Thanks for that...!

It's ATB typed badly.

I think MTB is "mountain bike" but what we generally ride are ATBs. I like the phrase Velo Tout Terrain most though

You might ride an ATB but my bike is useless on anything but massive rocks so it's definitely a MTB!

ATB used to be used for the cheap nasty catalogue bikes so I don't want that coming back...

I've always read it as an abbreviation for MounTainBike (unfortunately).

I did like ATB back in the early 80's but it has become linked to the BSO of supermarket fame now.

My personal favourite is the Portuguese BTT (bicicleta todo o terreno) though.

Wasn't Mountain Bike what gary fisher branded the first "ATB" and it stuck like Hoover and Bic?

For me MTB or ATB is peddaling a bike, any sort of bicycle off the tarmac.

I'm going to say an abbreviation of MounTain Bike just to be awkward like. Certainly nothing to do with the sea 🙂

I have never heard the term multi terrain bike , its MounTain Bike for me.
That most of them take kids to school and overweight blokes around farmers fields just shows how willing we are to use rhe wrong tool given the correct marketing.

I always thought it became an abbreviation for MounTain Bike but started out as Multi Terrain Bike.

Which irks me less than Tim Berners-Lee not knowing worldwide is one word....

I always thought it was Mountain Bike - even back in the late 80's when I started out on a Raleigh with a gate like frame! ('86 I think it was... back in the days when the local bike shops were all roadie places that felt you would "grow into it" and before the concept of "frame clearances" had been developed... the nadger/top tube interface was a right of passage back then!)

I was certain it was Mountain Terrain Bike.

Quite like those terms. MTB and ATB. I like the idea that they are tools for exploration. Rather than something to get rad on - that's what BMXs are for.

Back in the late eighties-ish, for a brief spell, it was assumed by some in the industry that the term "mountain bike" had been copyrighted by one of the big manufacturers (can't remember which), and thus the term ATB was used instead. This then seems to have seperated into ATB covering the cheap & nasties, and MTB becoming mountain terrain bike, and covering the proper mouuntain bikes. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to have stopped crap being markketed as muntain bikes.

+1 for Mountain Bike...

But it is a bit of a misleading name for the bikes we ride. Most never go near a mountain!

Han, but the thought did sprout from a FB post where someone mentioned a fat bike should be an "all terrain bike", not a MTB (mountain bike)..

I kind of thought it WAS Multi terrain bike..
