I use a lupine piko (separate battery one). Not cheap but bloody brilliant.

Everything is below the top of the helmet (lamp front, battery rear) so you're not constantly clonking it on stuff either.

XML torch from Ebay, as recommended in a thread on here. Cost £11 and gives similar output to, say, a Diabolo with a really good beam pattern. Runs off 18650 batteries and I very rarely need to change the battery on a 2-3 hour ride. It mounts low-ish (using a lockblock) and doesn't feel heavy in use. Can't think of any reason to pay more.

If talking commuting, I use a DX 300 lumen torch that takes 18650 batteries. Really really good. (just lash it to the helmet directly using a ski-velcro tie thing)

For off road riding I use on the helmet a version of the magicshine that has a really tight beam pattern so amazing to complement a wider beam at the bars. just put the battery in my Mule.

HTH!

I spose the obvious answer is another magicshine then. Im never sure I like the look of the mount/strap tho.

I currently use a trout mini, puts out a nice amount of light & is great as it's nice and low (lower than even a MS XML/p7 unit), as I hate clattering light on low hung branches.

Off-hand if money not an problem & I wanted a new unit, I'd look at Trouts current offering the Spider light (or a mini if your pocket were quite as deep), or the Gloworm unit from Neninja
Oh and On-one were offering a dual XML unit too, and I'm sure Brant reckoned they were looking at others(?)

Otherwise, I reckon your looking at MS clone, XML or P7 dependant on your preference.

PS: I've give you a couple of quid for your old XML torch 😉

Homemade p7 light here

Why not put a remote battery pack on your torch if it gives enough light but not for long enough?

Would it not need some form of protection circuit?

Nope. Just make sure the voltage is the same

Magicshine MJ-872- superb. Means your bar light will be no more than a backup though, but a good helmet light makes bar lights more or less irrelevant IME.

AyUps here, too. Narrow beam on the helmet, wider beam on the bar. The gecko helmet mount is fantastic. They're bright, tiny, and lightweight.

Ay-Up, though the exchange rate may have messed up the price

£30 Magicshine but use cableties instead of the elastic strap to hold the bracket on the helmet.
Light can still be fixed and adjusted with the rubber O-ring, or removed for summer, leaving the bracket to catch on the low hanging trees.
I added an extension cable to allow the battery to rest at the bottom of the backpack...tried one ride with it fixed to the helmet and realised it is too heavy.
