Just about to get myself a CX bike so i can ride back from work through the woods, idea is to buy a frame and swap allt eh bits over from my commute bike, jsut buy some new canti brakes.

I have Krysium elites on the commute bike, are these strong enough to use on a cx bike? my ride will be back mainly through fire roads and muddy singel track with the od rock and root.

but eventually thinking of the three peak challenge.

are these wheels strong enough? have had a look at wiggle and CRC and there is no specific CX wheels tab so presume normal wheels are used?

What do you use?

Many thanks

Dave

I ordered a CX bike last week and have been thinking about the same thing, but I would suspect that tyre size and pressure would play a greater part.

I use Ksyrium Elites for cross racing - very strong and quite light. A great wheel.

People use about every wheel system going for cross. However if youre doing a daily commute you might want something easilly repairable, especaily easy to true.

road wheels are fine. I race with a 12 spoke carbon jobbie on the front!

Kysirium come spec'd on Kona Major Jake and loads used on 3 pks.
My frame has 135mm rear, so use XT hubs.
Before that I used Aksiums, no bother. Tried some 24 spoke wheels for a while, but destroyed the rear pretty quickly.
You may need to change to a 'bigger' cassette - 12-27 or whatever, so may need a different rear mech too.

i go with 32 db spoke, cxp33 rims and ultegra hubs, absolutely bombproof even with my ample weight and ham-fisted handling and pretty cheap build.

open pros are also very popular.

I use Open Pro rims, 32 spoke on Hope road hubs but pretty much anything goes in CX. The common roadie trick is to retire your old road wheels into a season or two of CX use. You'd be surprised at how much abuse road wheels can take, I've seen Ksyriums and carbon-rimmed tubs survive the Three Peaks with no trouble.
