You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Looking at buying a new Hardtail, my on-one is to small. The Ragley is definitely a possibility. Do you think that one of the Ragley's could get away with being a good all-rounder (a bit of XC, DH, Jumps etc.)?
Can't see why not. I've been riding my Blue pig for two months now and I've used it to clean things that I'd not been able to do on the inbred. It's certainly more confidence inspiring when heading downhill, but climbs just as well as the inbred
nbt - have found it much heavier or is it not much of a difference?
the frames side by side were not very different at all, based on me picking them both up at once. at 5lbs odd it's not a lightweight, in fact I think my FS bike is probably lighter than the piggie, but certainly rides light if you see what I mean. If you were closer I'd offer you a test ride with pleasure - if you want to come on the STW North marple ride, you can stay with No_discerning_taste and I'll loan you the piggie for the day 😉
Mine's a 16" BTW, I rode a 16" inbred. I previously rode an 18" inbred but preferred the 16" for handling. I'm 5'9" with a 31" inseam.
I ride a 20" inbred, and was looking at the 18" blue pig. I'm 6'1", but the 20" just feels to long. Thanks very much for the offer of the demo, I've ridden the 18" protype titanium version on a couple of rides when i was up at the mag and that worked wonders on the trails round tod and Hebden, plus the titanium is lighter, just the weight of the steel version was what i wanted to no about and also if it would work on flatter grounds like the ridgeway and then be able to go off and ride at Afan etc. I need to see if i can sort a group ride around the Oxfordshire area 😉 Thanx
Recently built up an 18" BP and initial impressions are good. Like nbt it felt heavy out of the box but built up I don't notice the weight. Feels quite compliant at the back end and it has loads of clearance so a good winter bike. Still not sure about the 50mm stem though - am really tempted to go a bit longer.
You know it Dom. The steel frame rides well like the Ti you've ridden. Don't know about the mmmBop because I've not ridden one, but it's lighter and would I imagine be ace with a set of big tyres on. A young lad like you doesn't need to worry about comfort.
Still not sure about the 50mm stem though - am really tempted to go a bit longer.
When I initially swapped bits on to my Ragley I had a 70mm stem, now have a 50mm and I prefer it. It did however feel a bit cramped compared to my other bikes. The accidental solution I discovered was to fit a longer saddle. This probably ruins Brant's careful rear triangle designing but it works for me 😀 Bike feels much better on singletrack, the gentle trails etc. I always drop my saddle for technical descending.
Hmmm thanks will move my saddle back a bit
My first reaction to getting my new Syncros saddle out was it's huge! Really like it now, much better than the short WTB I had.
love mine, just wish i could get out on it a bit more.
Thanks Ed for getting back on the right thought of mind :-), my wage slip should come through next week, so hopefully get a new frame in the next couple of weeks :-).
Borrowed a friends Trek EX8 today and it refirmed my love of al things hardtail, yeh man, you feel alot more connected to the trail 😉
Now I've just got to decide whether to get ne blue pig frame or 24" jump bike hmmm...
Have a look at the myragley site for a short vid(have a laugh!!)of me on my 2nd ride out with my Pig.
My first ride on a Pig was down the Peaks out of Hope on 18bikes test/demo bike on a very, very, very windy day. Guided by a mate,Sheldon, we did most of the Peaks classics in and around that area covering 25 or mls.
I am not the greatest climber so really could not comment on whether it is any better than my other bikes or not and the fkng wind realyy was bad so unable to judge on that day.
Anyway I took an instant liking and bought a black frame, the skwash had been sold. Using my Kona Dawg and old Bonty as donor bikes, a set of 130 Bombers from scotabroad and a 70mm stem ex ridgeback from my lbs I built the Pig up.
First ride was from Keswick with a friend and her son up and around Glenderterra, Blencartha and Latrigg. No dramas.
2nd ride was last Tues with the Cotswold posse, ayatollahniche and his mates from here around Mabie "secrets". Magic fun. Still to let the Pig of the leash and get some speed up but for tight twisty stuff it is only the rider that has problems.
Only changes I plan are to try a 50mm stem. The demo bike had one but I felt just a bit unstable, wavy wand type of steering especially when going slow. Ok at speed but on slow techy stuff it was too fast and wavy about. Some bigger tyres. Some decent forks when budget allows sometime next year.
Compared to my old steel Bonty the frame is pretty rigid, esp the rear. I find it seems to hang up on boulders whereas the Bonty would spring over them???? Maybe just me atm getting used to it. The Bonty is very flexi tho 😆
I have the 18, am 6ft, 15st fully laden etc.
I have changed bikes from a 16yr old steel Bonty on 85mm forks and a Kona Dawg primo 5infs to a new age Pig ❗
This will be my only bike for some time, probably last me the rest of mike biking days actually 😉
I'm running a 75mm stem on mine as that's all the bike shop had in stock in the "affordable" price range. Might try a shorter one if I can lay my hands on one but the 75mm is not proving a problem
I have a 50mm stem on mine, at first it feels a bit weird, but get over the bars and it's great. Climbing wise, i changed from a Gary fisher ht to the blue pig, and where my old bike was very light on the front on steepish climbs resulting in little traction, the blue pig is very stable, thats with the fork at 130mm too
nbt any chance i could have a short play on it on the 8th g
@nbt - I'm going to have a 60mm OS stem going very soon off the 224, so you could try that if you want?
(don't ask why I'm lurking here - just curious...)
, mail me and we can discussjustme
Gavin, might take you up on that cheers, just to see what difference it makes
actually when I think about it climbing is good considering such a short stem. I was expecting lots of wheelying but that is not the case.
What I meant in previous post re me being a poor climber is more to do with dodgy knees/back meaning I am unable to get much speed up, more of a grinder 🙄
