Am looking to upgrade my son's specialised hardrock from v-brakes to disks. What brake set should I be looking at? Am assuming I want a hydraulic set rather than cable operated. and not too expensive
(helpful) suggestions please?
Depends on your budget but I have never gone wrong with Shimano disc brakes. Have tried SLX, XT and XTR - they will all depend on how much you want to spend / how much weight you want to save. All do the same thing though - they make you stop!
I have some 2013 elixir 1 for sale 40 without rotors.pads are good they have done under 30 miles since new
If you do buy new, the Shimano Deore discs are a total bargain. I bought some for my BFe and have been very impressed - for the money you really can't go wrong. Mine were £80 for the pair excluding rotors and mounts.
CRC have the old Deore (M486) at £25/£27 an end. They're euro style so the levers wil need swapping over, and the front one comes with a short hose (700mm). Cheaper than cable and better too.

Note, regardless of what the ad shows, they both come with lever, hose all assembled, and pads and 160mm IS-Post mounts.
Spot on for £52, I've just got a pair.
thanks guys! I will be getting new as they will be a present (thx for the offer davew). Deore sounds good as that will fit in well with the rest of his groupset:-)
