He's into his bmxing but he wants to do a bit of mountain biking too, I think he needs a bike that is built to hammer about on as well as being able to do some long ish rides, I thought a dirt jump bike might be what he needs? Looking at getting a second hand as I just can't afford a new one. Any suggestions on a particular bike that may do all this? All advice much appreciated, cheers.
Brand X frame, Bomber dirt £50 each offa ebay. Deore everything else some of which came off the last and will most likely last for the next.
Some nice steel ones but he liked that one, some can have long top tubes. DMR are nice but expensive. Most take 24" wheels too.
Whatever it is, make sure it's lightweight and the right size for him.
Something like a Kona shred 24/Scott voltage 24 frame with upgraded forks would be perfect. Am sure there will be some second hand, somewhere.
Decathlon have a new bike called the subsim tasty, the better one has gears and looks like a decent bike (Bmx/Mtb cross) but £450. Available in 26 and 24".
If you wanted to go 26", a small original chameleon would be good. Might be a bit big though.
DMR Trailstar with 100mm fork and deore kit here for our 11yr old. He loves it.
Cheers chaps, Ian, been looking for a kona shred on eBay but seem hard to find, not to keen on the Scott voltage, any more suggestions? Was looking at the adults dirt jump bikes as they seem to have loads of clearance, and slackish geometry for him, them dmr's look nice but pricey, his birthday in just under two week,
I need to pull my finger out! 😮
Maybe I should get him an adults xs size 26 wheels? Thoughts please? 🙂
a little older but I did a lot of dirt jumping from age 12 on a 15 inch, 1999 stumpjumper comp 26 inch with 75mm of Manitou SX travel
At that age you are so light an XC bike will take a lot of abuse
What about an XS 456 or summer season??
Mamadirt on here had a 14" Inbred in full dirt jump guise it looked great.
An idea of budget would help?
or even a blue pig?
Trailstars are a solid choice and can be had for cheap. Might be a heavy build though.
I noticed that CRC were flogging off the 24" Kona's Shred's recently here. A 13" frame. Looks perfect
not to keen on the Scott voltage,
Why not? its like a little chameleon and tough enough for anything a youngster will throw at it.

Another one that might be worth a look is the Commencal Ramones 24, but not sure if there will be many on Ebay.
If you are looking at a jump/4x bike, the identity Krisis sl looks ace (but probably pricy). The commencal absolute might also be worth a look and will be cheaper (and more likely to find its way to ebay)

Quite a few local ones on Pinkbike but you will be stuck with a single speed!
unless you use an alfine rear wheel
Kona Stinky 2-4? My 10yr old has one and it's an excellent bike.

This.
Identiti Dr Jekyll, built up with 24" wheels when he was smaller and now on 26" wheels.

Cheers guys, thinking an xs on one might be the answer, cheers rob, I like on one's geometry and I think it would suit his style, plus the fact they're fantastic value, so looking for an xs second hand for £300ish
On ones do not have anything close to resembling dirt jump geometry..
Yes your quite right there tom, but I'm asking for suggestions and still a little unsure as to what to get him, I thought jump bike thinking they'd be chuckable for him, however looking more into it, it seems they might be a little heavy for him as he wants to do some riding too, the on one's seem to do very small adult frames, and geometry on the on one's seem quite hard core, and the prices look good too. An on one out is! 😀
Just need to find one now! 😐
The problem is the chainstays, wheelbase and top tube are really long which is gonna make it harder to manoeuvre about, especially if he wants to take it off any jumps.
have you looked at the Commencal Absloluts on ebay? A short one would probably fit, they have gear hangers and some of them are pretty cheap.
tom, you really need to see Mamadirts 14" little red Inbred in full dirt jump getup, yeah it doesnt sound right but it sure as hell looked the ticket. You would be very supprised.
I will start a thread see if she still hangs about on here..
I'm just about to sell my daughter's Kona Shred 2-4. She's had it for the past 3 years (shes now 14).The only changes I made was a bigger ratio cassette and hydraulic disk brakes (the unused cable shifter/cable disc shifters will go back on). I toyed with the idea of sticking a set of 100mm forks and a 26" wheel up front. I've had a longer stem on it recently to accommodate her growth. I'm building up a small frame with 26" wheels for her to replace the Kona.
The shred 2-4 is not an XC bike and is burly enough for any 10 yr old. My daughter's ridden in the Alps and various UK trail centres. I think with something like a 100 mm fork up front it would be great.

Tinsy, I know just the pic to which you're referring but I'm burgered if I can find it anywhere. IIRC it was wearing DMR Trailblade forks with braced cromoly bars. This'll have to do instead . . .

I have a small mongoose fireball frame going spare, silver and takes discs or v brakes. Can post and will be cheap.
Email in profile if interested.

Kona shred is what ive seen a lot of small kids riding as their first do it all type bike, and fit it out yourself. He probably get better parts and if you use decent discs, they usually have smaller more suitably sized levers 😕

Not yet blower and the clock is ticking! 😐
I've searched high and low, really like the look of them bikes mamadirt, they look exactly like the kinda bike I'm looking for him, like a proper scaled down bike, but with a hard core xc look to them, rather than a heavy chunky over precautious frame, he doesn't seem to like all the kid specific bikes, he says they all look similar, I saw a nice14" 456 summer season on pink bike, but had already gone! 🙁
I'll check them konas out too.
Cheers moniex, appreciate it, I'll have a look at them.
There's a nice dmr sidekick frame in the classifieds. And Merlin have a Deore groupset on special.
Cheers tinribz, I'll check it out, so I take it you don't still have that 456 still for sale? 😐
Very nice frame that, shame, anyway I'll check out that dmr, and the deore groupset is a good idea, might just by that then look for a descent frame and forks.
456 went by way of ebay, they are a bit long in the top tube anyway.
Ok cheers for that.
Might be a bit late but just saw this and seemed like they might be what you're after.. http://www.pinkbike.com/news/ns-bikes-clash-jr-2013.html
