Just tyre size ?
what's the minimum size required to be classed as a fat bike ?
2.8-3.0 or bigger?

About 4"+ I think. Anything less is just chubby.

I'd say 26" wheels with 4" plus tyres

Def 4 and bigger. As said above any less is chubby. Which I'm now preferring.

3.8" (because that's what Nates and other Surly tyres are/were).

Although that's fairly arbitrary as plus tyres come in 3.25 now so it's really just a continuation. And it depends on what you want to use it for, 3.8 isn't optimally fat enough for snow and 5"+ is probably overkill everywhere else.

The Krampus (29x3) was never really considered a fatbike, more half-fat.

And when WTB came up with B+, it was based on a 2.8" tyre on a 45mm(internal) rim.

+1

That's where fat started.
