I've had enough of the GXP crank on my MTB and wondering what's best to replace it with. A penny for your thoughts.
Bike is a 2017 Trek Procaliber 9.7, technically a softail but rides much like a hardtail IMHO.
I bought it 2nd hand and quite a few of the components had already been changed, including the cranks being SRAM XX1 GXP. They look sexy but have been continually problematic with creaking and binding/draggy bearings.
From an engineering perspective the GXP system just seems like a really stupid setup for a spindle receiving oscillating loads on both sides so I'm keen to replace with something else.
I've also somehow found myself in possession of a Hope BB for 30mm axle.
So I guess my options are:
1) Give the GXP cranks another chance and try and fix with another BB
2) New 30mm axle cranks with Hope 30mm BB (e.g. e13, Hope)
3) New Shimano cranks with Hope 30mm BB and shims
4) New Shimano cranks with new 24mm BB
But the questions is which option and why? and also any particular ideas for cranks/BB to satisfy a particular option.
Rear wheel is Boost spacing, the BB is what Trek calls PF92, aka BB92 i.e a shell with 41mm ID and 91.5mm width.
For the most part I do XC riding/racing, although I do sometimes do trail riding type stuff - I did a DH race on the bike last year for a laugh.
I do have Loctite bearing retaining compound for installing the BB into the frame.
Shimano Cranks and a shimano BB, best engineered option IMO.
GXP tolerancing pretty woeful and the threaded BB's dont last at all, the pressfits seem better.
I currently have a raceface 30mm next r cranks with a hope bb, no creaks or issues.

I currently have a raceface 30mm next r cranks ...... no creaks or issues.
Give it time 🙂
I'm full expecting a pedal insert to become detached, then raceface can have them back for warranty!
Shimano cranks with a bb with replaceable bearings. I've just bought an uberbike bb for 32 quid. The bearings are 15 quid. It's very good. And it's in blingy gold!
#4 with a non-boost setup, for a better chainline
Option 4
Shimano xt.
I loved square taper race face. I did not love race face ht2. I also disliked the sram cranks I had.
One of my mates wore through an xt crank. He rides a lot in the dark peak
