Hi, it's listed as a Meta 4 but the seller doesn't know any more.

Not sure on the exact model but that's from around 2010 when they had their manufacturing nightmare. If it's been ridden properly it's probably already cracked.

Given the 5.5 markings on the the swingarm I'd say its more likely a meta 5.5

Yeah it's a Meta 5.5. It even lists the travel as 140mm (~5.5 inches). I had one similar to that but in black. I'm not sure exactly which year it is, perhaps 2008? It was a warranty replacement for my 2007 one, which broke. The replacement also broke.

At some point (2009?) they went to a monocoque swingarm so you could possibly date it by that.

But hey, if that one hasn't broken yet maybe it's a lucky one, it doesn't look like it's had a hard life and it seems like a fair price to me. I remember that bike being great although I don't know how it would stand up against something more modern.

Meta 5.5 VIP I think before they changed the swingarm. I had a non VIP- great bike but it did crack in the end.

It's a Meta 4, the 5 never had that swingarm on it as far as I know.

Thanks everyone. Very helpful.

I'm looking for a full susser to convert to an ebike so it'll really be for descending.

Can't convert my Iron Horse 6 point as the 83mm BB means I can't use the Bafang mid drive kit I want and I want to keep my LaPierre Zesty for pedalling.(Actually I don't want to mess about with the IH either.)

Is the consensus that this will crack? Where do they crack?

Is the consensus that this will crack?

When this generation of bikes were out I worked for a company that had a fleet of Commencal demo bikes and a race team riding Meta's and Supreme's. The amount of broken frames completely took over a whole shed and was renamed the graveyard. Almost everything cracked and then the replacements cracked.

I'm not sure exactly what went wrong but I think they switched factories soon after.

There's many reasons why I wouldn't buy one now (over 10 years worth of better bikes to choose from) but I definitely wouldn't use one for what you describe.

It says 5.5 on the swingarm. It looks tatty but then it is around 12 years old, they changed the swingarm in 2008 so it’s 2007 or earlier. I’d steer well clear at that price!

I had a Super 4 of about that age, the bright green one. It was brilliant to ride - and cracked. Chainstay weld at the BB end failed.

Totally unrelated but I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Commencal now. They've got about 4 bikes that I would absolutely love to own.

That's a meta 5.5 with "VIP" paint job

I could sell you a Meta 5 frame + shock with the 4x swing arm (similar to the one you're looking at)

The frame was a warranty replacement after my first meta 5 cracked 🙂

Thanks people. All very informative.

I think, given the advice above along with my intended use, I'll give it a miss.

I'll look for something a bit beefier.

Meta 5 did for the early ones. Friend had one, 08 model I think (wife had an 07 meta 4). Both from when the UK importers dumped the stock really cheaply.

Yes, it's a first version 5.5 meta. I had a 2008 Meta 5, and yes.....it cracked. Got a 2010 replacement but sold it soon after. Great bikes, despite the issues.

I wouldn’t pay close to that for a 10 years old 26er with a reputation for cracking. Maybe £250 at best.

Of course Covid made everything go bonkers but something like a Boardman Pro FS would have been around £600 prior to that. I sold one for around that money a few years back - 650b / Revelation / 1x GX / Guide RS / Mavic wheels etc
