You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I’m a slightly Beefy chap in my very early 50’s. I’ve just bought a two year old DMR Sled as a birthday pressie to myself - my family weren’t interested so I thought bugger them. I want to put a coil shock on it with probably around a 600lb spring. Any advice out there about what shock I should buy that doesn’t bankrupt me.
Cheers guys keep safe in this difficult time.
Marzochi bomber cr or fox van, same thing. Cheap and cheerful with none of that Lockout nonsense.
DVO Jade is also well priced.
X - Fusion Vector could be a good contender vs price of Fox van
I'd look for a used CCDB coil in the relevant size.
It may have been matched by some high-end options now, but it's still a stunningly good shock.
It’s a good option but I just want something easy to set up.
Is the Sled metric or imperial shock sizing?
As a 'Beefy' 50 something, i'm happily running both an Ohlins coil, and a CCDB coil on my bikes. If you find something second hand, and factor in a service, someone like TF will spring it, and set it for your weight and even suggest some of the damper settings if you're not keen to fiddle with it yourself.
Both my shocks have been very reliable, despite my 115kg regularly landing sketchy jumps and not slowing down for root infested trails.
To avoid bankruptcy, buy second hand, but buy quality.
I've also got a nice Marzocchi coil fork for sale, perfect for the DMR sled @ 170mm.... see classifieds. : -)

I have a CC DB Coil Inline on my DMR Sled with the progressive white spring which has been a real improvement over the standard Coil.
i weigh 95kg and I used the 550 coil with no issues in the alps last year.
It’s a good option but I just want something easy to set up.
In that case, I'd maybe look for a nice used Van R and consider getting the Push upgrade along with a service.
Assuming TF still do that.
Ended up pulling the trigger on a new 2019 Fox Van rc for a good price. Doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of some shocks but, I’ll get used to it and learn exactly what the adjustments can do and truly what I need.
Thanks
Guys
