After many years of using XT cassettes I am wondering if SRAM are worth a go. I use SRAM 991 chains.

I was looking at getting the SRAM 990 cassette

Any comments on which is best - one bike is used for general natural and trail centre riding the other for racing and natural trails.

Thanks

There both similar in quality and performance once covered in poo and grit. Get whatever you can find cheapest.

Make sure you have the same on all your bikes, for hassle free swap overs when your bike dies on race day 😉

Sure there will be plenty of folk along soon to tell you there preference!

Yup, I'll second that...

Think the SRAM PG980 is supposed to be "XT" quality, similar design and weigh anyway... I have one of each, can't say I notice the difference in performance terms. XT does look like it's wearing marginally better though.

SRAM PG990 is supposed to be slightly higher quality, not XTR good, but a step up from XT I believe... If the price is right, give it a go...

Just switched to the SRAM PG990 and had the XT before - the difference...... None! But the alloy spider is a must as 'oldfart' pointed out.

I've used both SRAM 980s and XT cassettes and have found the XT to be more wear resistant. However 990 is supposed to be a higher price point but you can pick them up at CRC for £45 (about the same as an XT cassette these days ).

I'm due to change my cassette, chainring and chain very soon and I think I'll be getting one of these. Shame SRAM don't do them with a Hope Blue spider.

SLX looks pretty good at £33 but SRAM's PG980 is a couple of quid away in price.

Why can't I find any published weights for SLX cassettes?

Hmmm.... Interesting. 282g for 11-32 isn't far from XT weight wise.

I'm unsure about using one with my Ti freehub but I'm very impressed.

Ti freehubs are much harder than ally. won't be a problem. I@ve got pg980s on ti freehubs and they've been fine

Edit: but then, I am quite scrawny..

decided to go for the XT, have the Hope Pro II hubs and have never had any problems in the past. Could get the 990 for only a few quid more but what they hey.

Thanks for the feedback.
