Not for me sadly, but for my 8 year old. Small and skinny for his age but strong (gymnastics stuff).

Sadly, I've never owned a BMX, but clearly as it's 'just a bike' I should know all about it, apparently. AFAIK it'll be mainly for ramp and skatepark use, with a bit of track and dirt jumping as an option.

I'm happy to throw a bit of money in (he's saving for it himself, has around £100 so far and I'm working him hard for a few quid now and then) to get something half decent, repairable and dare I say it cool.

Where to begin? Any pointers?

You would get an ok secondhand Wethepeople for just over a ton. There's a shed load of BMX's for sale on pink bike.

Lots of guides and vids around, for example:

Check out source bmx mate, they've got some older models on sale, which will give you a better spec for less than the 2015 models. Drop them a line or email them with your budget and they'll recommend one for you.
