My little (I say little, he's a 6'4 clydesdale) brother has been given a bike that's been rusting in someone's garden for two years, and is getting into riding. I've fixed it up as best I can, but it's pretty knackered. It's also too small.

So he's after a new bike, in the £300 range. I reckon a hybrid is ideal, his riding is pottering around town and Sustrans type tracks, so I can't see much benefit to an MTB and he definitely doesn't want drop bars. It's pretty flat round here so singlespeed might be OK, but if he extends his range a few gears might be good.

Is there anything out there at this kind of price that's not gonna be a hunk of junk? Second hand is definitely an option.

Don’t over complicate things.
Hard tail MTB, rigid forks ideally, gears.
Something like a Rockrider 520 will sort him out.

I'd go second hand but that can throw up some issues. Also not a great time to buy used. Decathlon is well worth a look. At that price point they are surprisingly good. As above a hardtail mtb. Might as well get something with gears and disk brakes.

Not in any hurry, I kinda figured that waiting might be prudent. The pogger bike will do for now. Tbh if it wasn't a knackered wreck I'd suggest fixing it up, but it'll cost way more than it's worth. Plus as I say, too small.

That Decathlon jobbie looks ideal. Think a mate has a Calibre at a similar price, that might be worth a look too.

Get him a 17" frame and put on a long stem and post. This will allow you to laugh your 4r5e off when he tries to ride it. Then get him an xxl

He's currently on a medium. With super skinny bars. It is a bit hilarious. But the fact he's out riding a bike fills me with joy.

town and a few sustrans?

B’Twin Hoprider 100

Even comes with guards, rack and dynohub f+r lighting

Can’t imagine anything more suitable or fully-equipped for £300

(Although for another £50 something like this is unbeatable for ride-quality, stsbility, build and spec: ebay link
